Puerto Rico Island Hotels

The forests chatter and squeal with birdcall, and every so often there's a sudden flash of hummingbird blue among the green. White-crested waves roll in, with shoals of surfers riding high. A dusky light softens the pastel hues of Old San Juan, and the evening has the subtle scents of the exotic Caribbean culture all around you. It’s with good reason that Puerto Rico is known as the Enchanted Island. Whether you come for the natural highs or the Caribbean community buzz, let Puerto Rico work its magic on you.

Things to see

The capital, San Juan, is the ideal place to start your Puerto Rican adventure. Old San Juan is intensely pretty, with each building a different sugary shade. Lose yourself in swashbuckling legends at oceanfront fortresses, or browse the markets and galleries of the Carolina Cultural District. If the old town is distinctly Latino, Plaza Las Americas is a slice of modern US life in the Caribbean. For full-on retail therapy, this vast mall is the place to go. If it’s adventure you’re after, hit the trails of El Yunque Rainforest. You can bathe in La Mina waterfall, or climb above the clouds to El Toro Peak, the highest point. When it comes to beaches, you’re spoiled for choice, but for a desert island escape, sail across to Isla de Culebra. Its Playa de Flamenco is perhaps Puerto Rico’s most beautiful beach, with miles of unspoiled white sand.

Hotels in Puerto Rico Island

From large, modern resorts to one-off, boutique properties, the hotels in Puerto Rico all invite a leisurely stay. The island knows how to do luxury, so you can spoil yourself with a magnificent, period-style suite and glamorous decor – think 4-poster beds and wood-paneled bars. The more contemporary resorts are chic and up-to-date, with amenities such as flat-screen TVs and deep-soaking bathtubs. Many provide water sports equipment and beach loungers, while some have onsite waterparks for family fun. If being by the sea isn’t enough, why not stay on a luxury boat? You can even get WiFi on board.

Where to stay

Offering a cosmopolitan atmosphere, San Juan has a range of places to stay, and plenty of attractions. As well as the charm of the old town, the resort areas on the beachfront have a swinging nightlife, with restaurants, bars, and clubs. Both luxury and budget hotels are available. Over in the east of the island, the Rio Grande – Fajardo region is a haven for adventurers and nature-lovers. There are some hotels within El Yunque State Park, while luxury hotels populate the coast, close to the popular El Conquistador golf course. For a boutique beach break, stay on Isla de Culebra.

How to get to Puerto Rico Island

Whether you choose to arrive by air or sea, getting to Puerto Rico Island is plain sailing. Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is just a short drive from central San Juan, and it’s the main gateway to the island. From there, you can hire a car or hop in a taxi. Some of the hotels can also arrange shuttle services. If you come to Puerto Rico on a cruise, you’re likely to arrive into the Port of San Juan, right at the edge of the old town. To get to Isla de Culebra, you’ll need to take a ferry from Fajardo.
