Shawnigan Lake Hotels

Shawnigan Lake, a quaint village on the southern end of Canada’s Vancouver Island, is a perfect place for a recreational summer holiday. This peaceful, welcoming lakeside community is specked with independent stores, family-owned restaurants, and old-world inns. There’s also an intriguing regional museum in the town. But the real draw to Shawnigan Lake is its surrounding provincial parks and its soft sandy beaches. Not to mention the pure blue lake itself, where you can canoe, kayak, and swim in its glass-like waters.

Things to see

Start your sun-washed Shawnigan Lake day by getting to grips with this rustic town’s captivating culture and history. The best place to do that is at the small Shawnigan Lake Museum. This family-friendly community museum focuses on Vancouver Island’s riveting rail history - shown through mini models and industrial artifacts - and the inspiring work of local artist E.J. Hughes. You can even watch historical slide shows in the museum’s old-time theater. Afterwards, begin your Shawnigan Lake outdoor adventures. On a sunny day, it’s great to book a kayaking or canoeing tour of the lake’s wildlife-rich shores, or simply sunbathe on the golden sands. Old Mill Park beach, on the east shore, is a great swimming beach. Intrepid adventurers, meanwhile, can set out into the untamed forestland of Koksilah River Provincial Park, while those after a relaxed hike can amble around Shawnigan Lake, or head to the relaxed well-developed trails in Spectacle Lake Park.

Where to stay

This area is ideal for families and couples alike, and you’ll find that in summer the streets are abuzz with friendly vacationers and locals looking to get out and appreciate Vancouver Island’s idyllic natural landscape. Stay slightly west of the center for a quieter, more residential atmosphere. Similarly, if you’re searching for complete tranquility, then stay on the sun-struck southwestern shore, away from the town.

How to get to Shawnigan Lake

Shawnigan Lake is based just 60 kilometers from Victoria International Airport, on the southern end of Vancouver Island. First, you’ll most likely need to fly to Vancouver International Airport - which serves dozens of direct, year-round flights from across the globe - and catch a short, 25 minute connecting flight to Victoria. But note that Victoria does serve direct flights from Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Seattle. At the airport, hire your own car onsite, and follow the Patricia Bay Highway south. Keep riding it as it becomes Island Highway, and get off at Shawnigan Lake Road. The drive should take about an hour. Once there, you can get around on foot or by bicycle - but it is handy to have your own rental car.
