Liberia Hotels

Liberia is sometimes nicknamed The White City after its whitewashed buildings which glisten in the bright sunshine. Perched on picture perfect beaches, you'll also discover fine white sands which feel soft under your feet, and sparkling turquoise oceans full of an abundance of colorful fish. If you can draw yourself away from the oceanfront, then this small city also has a selection of historic buildings in Spanish Colonial style, as well as plenty of opportunities to hike and enjoy the dramatic volcanic landscape.

Things to see

As the name suggests, the Hidden Garden Art Gallery hides behind tall palm trees, and is set amongst a garden blooming with bright flowers. Step inside and you'll find several small rooms, all full of locally created paintings, sculptures, and other art works, with pieces on sale that make excellent souvenirs of your trip. If you want to appreciate the natural world in and around Liberia, then a trip to Africa Mia is great for all the family. It allows you to enjoy the safari experience without the camping or long travels, being driven around the acres of land in an open air vehicle. The theme brings Africa to Costa Rica, with many native species of the continent roaming freely, and you'll be able to feed friendly giraffes, spot zebras running in packs, and get up close to cute camels. Iglesia de la Agonía dates back to 1825, and this charming Spanish church is one of the city's classic white buildings. The inside is deceptively big, with high ceilings and spectacular Catholic themed art.

There's a large number of restaurants throughout the area, many serving traditional Costa Rican dishes, in friendly, locally owned bistros and cafés. The city is surrounded by volcanic landscapes, with lush greenery and exotic species hiding amongst the trees. There are many hiking trails close-by, as well as organized activities such as zip lining and mountain biking, and the white sandy beaches are close to the city for swimming and relaxing.

How to get to Liberia

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia is the main airport for the Guanacaste Province, and therefore there's a busy schedule of flights from major cities around the USA, Canada, and South America. The city is a 20 minute drive away, and you can book a place on the airport shuttle buses that meet each flight, taking you directly to your hotel. There are also private taxis available at the airport, and desks for the major car rental firms. Another option is to take the public buses, although these aren't recommended for people with a lot of luggage, as there are no racks, and although they're cheap they can take a long time with many stops.
