Berlin Hotels

As far as city break destinations go, Germany’s historic, vivacious, and creative capital city delivers on every level. History lovers will be captivated by the city’s first rate museums, historic architecture, and iconic monuments – many of which paint a vivid picture of Berlin’s turbulent past. Culture junkies will be mesmerized by the city’s flourishing art scene and bohemian vibe, whilst nightlife aficionados will all find their bliss in amongst Berlin’s legendary collection of hip bars, boisterous beer gardens, and pulsing night clubs.

Things to see

The city’s most iconic landmark, Brandenburg Gate was built in 1791, on the site of one of Berlin’s historical city gates. Standing pillared and proud, the neoclassical arch is crowned with a sculpture of the goddess Eirene, elegantly riding her quadriga, pulled by 4 horses. Just 1 block north, the stately Reichstag Building is another of Berlin’s most recognizable sites. Originally completed in 1894 and renovated during the 1990’s, the Italian High Renaissance masterpiece has since been the meeting place of the German parliament. Its most striking feature is its modern glass dome, which allows visitors to enjoy 360-degree views over Berlin. Like other parts of the city, Potsdamer Platz was destroyed during World War II, and was left in ruins during the events of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. Thanks to a spot of 21st century development however, it now stands as a glitzy skyscraping hub of shopping, dining, art and entertainment.

Where to stay

Whilst not a small city, Berlin’s key areas are compact and easily walkable, which is especially true of Mitte. The city’s historical core, it’s home to many of the star attractions, including Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag Building, as well as over 6,000 years’ worth of art and cultural history dotted about Museum Island. A hotel in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district offers a more upscale stay, with regal sites like the domed Charlottenburg Palace, as well as lux-label shopping along Kurfurstendamm. Friedrichshain is the city’s bohemian hipster haven, known for its trendy nighttime revelry and the East Side Gallery – a portion of the Berlin Wall colorfully adorned with political murals.

How to get to Berlin

For those jetting in, Berlin’s well-connected Tegel Airport is usually the gateway of choice. Conveniently situated around 8 kilometers from Berlin’s core, the airport is well served by buses and taxis, both of which can get you into the city center in good time. Alternatively you can fly into Berlin’s smaller and slightly further away Schonefeld Airport, which handles many budget airlines. Berlin Central Station is a potential gateway too. Known for its glass encased architecture, trains from all over Europe make a stop here.
