Cancun Hotels

Cancun has a reputation as a party resort, and during spring break you'll certainly see lots of gatherings on the sandy white beaches and around stylish hotel pools. However it's also an upmarket and cosmopolitan resort with 5 star hotel rooms overlooking the turquoise seas, all-inclusive accommodation, and modern malls catering to tourists from across the globe. Luckily, it's easy to find a resort that suits your needs, with distinctive hotel styles, and you're just as likely to see families paddling in the cool seas as you are to see bachelor parties.

Things to see

With shops and restaurants set along a canal, several contemporary malls, iconic fountains, and palm-tree lined streets; La Isla Shopping Village is practically a religious experience for devoted shoppers. Take a gondola ride down the canal in the central street and you'll see small white buildings with red roofs housing smaller boutiques and upmarket dining, as well as the aquarium where non-shoppers can be dropped off for a dolphin swimming experience to keep them out of the way. If the heat gets too much you can step inside one of the contemporary air-conditioned malls with cool tiled flooring and fountains, allowing you to enjoy a mixture of big American and Mexican brands and international favorites. Mexico is a popular destination for enthusiastic golfers, and the professional 18-hole Riviera Cancun Golf Resort has long sweeping fairways with well-kept greens and views of the calm ocean. The course also has a unique position close to a crocodile habitat, and lucky golfers may spot one of these amphibians emerging from the water.

Where to stay

Reaching out into the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Cancun Hotel Zone is where you'll find the majority of upmarket hotels, with resorts vying for the best spot along the perfect powdery beaches. You'll spot high rise and traditional hotels hidden behind palm trees and meticulously landscaped gardens, as well as souvenir shops and boat hire huts close to the busiest tourist spots. Boulevard Kukulcan has been compared to the Las Vegas strip in certain areas, with nightclubs and bars flashing in neon at night, and tourists slamming back tequila shots as they enjoy live music. There's also more sedate entertainment happening for those who have grown out of their clubbing phase, and you'll find rousing musicals and shows hosted in modern auditoriums.

How to get to Cancun

If you arrive via Cancun International Airport you'll enjoy spectacular views of the seafront as your plane touches down, and there are regular flights landing daily from across the USA and Canada, as well as domestic flights from Mexico City. The airport is just a half hour drive south of the city, so you can simply book a car rental to pick up at the terminal, or reserve your place on one of the many shuttle services.
