Curacao Hotels

The Dutch Caribbean boast some of the most sumptuous beach locations in the world, and one standout example is Curacao. Located just off the coast of Venezuela, it isn't just a superb place to work on your sun tan – although if you want to get bronzed, it will do that nicely. Curacao is also a hotspot for diving amid the darting, kaleidoscopically colorful sea creatures, and it will also satisfy history lovers too with its handsome port capital that brims with eye-catching architecture.

Things to see

It almost goes without saying that most visitors to Curacao head straight for the beach. The only question is, which one? There are places to bask galore, whether you opt for the palm trees and wide open bay of Jan Thiel Beach – which features its own child-friendly wading area and water park – or prefer the idea of a craggy cove like Kalki Beach. There are almost too many beaches to count, and it's a pleasurable task to seek them all out. Curacao Sea Aquarium is a major attraction of the island. Interestingly, it has an open water system meaning the pools are all in contact with the sea, giving it a natural vibe. Here you can gasp at dolphin shows, feed flamingos and sharks, and get to grips with starfish and stingrays. Meanwhile, you can venture into very core of the island in the Hato Caves, a subterranean realm of stalactites and stalagmites carved by the sea itself. It's an eerie, alien-like world, and even features cave drawings more than 1,500 years old. If you can pull yourself away from the naturally beautiful hotspots, the capital of Willemstad is also a delight for the eyes thanks to its bright pastel-colored Dutch Colonial buildings. They're dotted along the harbor, and there's nothing more relaxing than meandering along the quaint lanes amid cafés and bars. Look out as well for the old Dutch forts, built back in the 17th century to keep pirates and foreign invaders out. These days they're tourist attractions, and some like Wiffort and Fort Amsterdam house shops and museums.

Hotels in Curacao

If it's 5 star luxury you're after, you can find it here. Think sumptuous rooms decked out with richly embroidered sheets, carved wood decor, and balconies overlooking a private beach. You can work on that tan just steps away from your guestroom, with sun loungers arranged in the haze of the sun, and cool drinks always to hand. Of course, there are hotels in Curacao to meet smaller budgets too, and even these exude style and offer practical amenities too, from flat-screen televisions to free WiFi.

Where to stay

The majority of hotels in Curacao are to be found in the Willemstad area. Unsurprisingly, the lion's share are on the coastline, meaning you're always close to those rich soft sands and lapping Caribbean waters. That said, some hotels are also located a little to the north, further inland and in the vicinity of Christoffel National Park. These are ideal for hikers and explorers who want to get stuck into the thousands of acres of exotic wilderness, teeming with flowers and wildlife.

How to get to Curacao

Hato International Airport, located in Willemstad, is the gateway to this island paradise. Once here, the relatively small size of Curacao means it's easy to explore its various sun-dappled nooks, although it's recommended that you do that by car to really make the most of your vacation. And if you'd prefer to get on the saddle, bicycle tours are also readily available.
