Santa Monica Hotels

The perfect golden sands, palm trees, and surfers daring the clear blue waves make Santa Monica the ultimate Californian destination. If you can ever draw yourself away from the idyllic beaches, the city itself is a luxurious destination with streets lined with high-end boutiques and fine dining establishments. At night, the city hosts lively, cosmopolitan nightclubs and bars, with the well-heeled turning out to party until dawn.

Things to see

Santa Monica Beach is one of the main attractions of the area. With miles of golden sands, clear blue waters with perfect surfing conditions, and the rolling mountains in the distance, it’s the perfect place to relax or play. Stroll along the boardwalk and you’ll come across Santa Monica Pier, a landmark that’s over 100 years old with a vintage Ferris wheel and dozens of family-friendly rides zipping in all directions. At night, the whole pier is beautifully lit up, with a fun, carnival atmosphere. South of the pier you start noticing a lot of bodybuilders, as this is the site of the Original Muscle Beach. Many famous movie stars have crafted their action hero bodies in this spot, and you can enjoy the warm sun and sea views as you pump iron. Just a couple of blocks from the beach is Third Street Promenade, an upscale, pedestrianized shopping street lined with palm trees. If you’re tired out from shopping, sit on one of the benches and enjoy the sounds of the talented street performers who play in the area, with a diverse range of music being played. At the south end of the promenade lies Santa Monica Place, a mall set over 3 floors, with dozens of high-end stores and restaurants. Its lack of roof means you can enjoy the Californian sunshine while you shop, and can appreciate the view from the al fresco restaurants on the top floor.

Hotels in Santa Monica

Hotels with close proximity to the sandy beach will often be the most luxurious, and there are plenty of Santa Monica hotels that offer sea view rooms. These upmarket options include facilities such as outdoor pools, spas, fitness centers, yoga sessions, cocktail bars, and fine dining. Guestrooms will have extras that could include bathrobes and slippers, iPod docking stations, flat screen televisions, and luxury toiletries. Those on a tighter budget could look at the chain hotels further into the downtown area. These places often have excellent facilities such as free WiFi, free breakfasts, and outdoor pools, with comfortable bedrooms, some equipped with mini-fridges, microwaves, and pillowtop beds for a cozy night’s sleep.

Where to stay

Downtown Santa Monica is a popular area for families and groups, with clean and modern pedestrianized areas, plenty of dining options, and a laidback vibe. Staying in this area means you’re just a short stroll away from the beach, and if you choose to stay further out, there are often free shuttle buses from the major hotels. Venice Beach to the south is also a popular vacation spot, with a slightly more bohemian vibe. The oceanfront shops are painted with colorful murals, and often have displays of beaded jewelry and homemade crafts.
