Grande Prairie Hotels

Even a coat of thick snow won't cool the warm welcome you'll receive on arrival in this lively town, that's brewing with character and charm. The community revolves around the farmers' market, where you can pick up everything from bowls - hand painted by indigenous tribe members - to slabs of flavorsome organic beef for dinner. Get right under Grande Prairie's skin by joining the residents in February for a sticky festival, where you'll celebrate Canada's national symbol - Maple Syrup.

Things to see

Push the accelerator, feel the roar of the engine, and hold on tight as you speed through the rolling hills surrounding Grande Prairie on a quad bike. Alberta is ripe for outdoor activity, and whether it's looking down on snow-blanketed fields as a hot air balloon's flame warms your back, or returning to Earth with a splash after launching from the ramp of a ski jump, Grande Prairie has it all. If it's too cold outside, admire the wavy architecture of Grand Prairie Regional College, which was designed by Douglas Cardinal, before trying your hand at indoor rock climbing. Grande Prairie's entertainment is provided by the large Crystal Centre, which hosts events all year round. Cheer with the locals as the Grand Prairie Storm take to the ice, or sit back and enjoy the tinkling of piano as top performers like Elton John stop by. On a clear night, you can see stars of a different kind by heading out to the peaceful Kleskun Hill. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the ethereal glow of the Northern Lights, unfolding majestically across the sky.

After a busy day making the most of this outdoor play area, there are few pleasures that can match melting into one of the deep, warm baths waiting in Grande Prairie hotel rooms. The luxury options allow you to start your days with a few lengths of an indoor swimming pool, to cool off after working up a sweat in a fully equipped gym. If you're on a budget, however, staying in a motel will save you money, and you'll be able to book with the knowledge that you won't be sacrificing any of the basics needed for a sound night's sleep. Apartments can also be rented, complete with washing facilities, ovens and refrigerators – not that you'll need to cook, considering the high quality selection of restaurants available downtown.

Where to stay

Grande Prairie is a compact town, meaning nearly every hotel is within walking distance of the inviting bars and restaurants. Slice open a pink steak, dripping with flavor, before enjoying tiger prawns - washed down with a taste of red wine - at one of the delicious steakhouses downtown. Another option is to stay a little further out of town, at Clairmont, where you'll be sandwiched between Ferguson and Clairmont Lakes, and just 10 minutes from the noisy rabble of trumpeter swans at Saskatoon Island Provincial Park.

How to get to Grande Prairie

The simplest way to get to the Peace River Country is to follow the lead of the area's famous swans, and fly there. Despite its relatively remote location, flights from Edmonton and Calgary land at Grande Prairie's small airport, which sits just out of town. Or, you could drive through the forest from Edmonton, arriving in Grande Prairie around 4 and a half hours later. Bus services also run between the 2 cities.
