High Level Hotels

In the depths of northern Alberta, High Level’s surrounded by forests and wild tundra. In winter it’s a white wilderness, but in summer the woodlands are green and the temperature is balmy. If you’re a fan of the great outdoors, hiking, fishing, and canoeing are just some of the recreational activities you can enjoy. And as the wilds are brimming with deer, moose, and geese, hunting’s a big pastime around these parts, too.

Things to see

Hike through pine forests along tree-shrouded trails, stopping for a picnic at a serene spot by a babbling creek. Pack your tent and strike out into the countryside for a night sleeping under the stars. Grab your binoculars to spot hundreds of different bird species that nest in the area. And with long northern days in summer, you can make the most of the crisp clean High Level air for as much as 16 hours of glorious daylight. Golf fans are in for a treat, as the most northerly grass greens in Alberta await at Fox Haven Golf and Country Club. Open from May until Thanksgiving, its friendly clubhouse, full grass-tee driving range, and practice putting green are the perfect spot to hone your skills. If all that fresh air gets too much, Mackenzie Crossroads Museum and Visitors Centre’s a go-to spot for buffing up on the local history. There’s even a replica trading post brimming with vintage medicine bottles.

Where to stay

The Mackenzie Highway runs through town on its way to the Northern Territories, and you’ll find most of High Level’s hotels and restaurants scattered on or around this major thoroughfare. Luckily it’s never busy with traffic, but if you’re worried about road noise you may prefer to choose a hotel away from here. No matter where you stay you won’t be far from restaurants, cafés and stores, as it takes no more than 10 minutes to drive from one side of town to the other. High Level Airport’s an 11-minute drive north on Mackenzie Highway, so if you stay on the northern edge of town you’ll be that bit closer.

To drive from Edmonton to High Level takes 7 hours 50 minutes, while a drive from High Level to popular Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park in the Northwest Territories takes 2 hours 30 minutes.
