Port Alberni Hotels

Port Alberni is a medium-sized city set deep within the lush, leafy forestland of the Alberni Valley, in the center of Canada’s Vancouver Island. The city is perched at the head of the Alberni inlet - a narrow stretch of water that meanders past mountains to the glorious Pacific - and attracts many outdoor enthusiasts. In the city’s nearby parks, you can take on hiking trails, rock climbing, and kayaking. There’s plenty to enjoy in the city itself too, like heritage sites and art galleries.

Things to see

Nature lovers won’t want to miss seeing Della Falls, Canada’s tallest waterfall. Set 60 kilometers from the city, and accessible by boat, this roaring pure-white waterfall cascades 440 meters through tall pointed pines and over sharp jagged rocks to the pool below. It takes a hefty hike from the boat drop-off point to get there, so Della Falls makes for a perfect camping trip. For an easy-going family hike, along river trails and past glowing creeks, head to Stamp River Provincial Park, beside the city. In Fall, you can even see the salmon rushing up the rolling rapids. Get to grips with some Port Alberni history at the McLean Steam Sawmill - a great spot for family-fun. This heritage site tells the story of the Alberni Valley’s original inhabitants and its beginnings as a lumber industry and fishing center, all through old-world artifacts and great marvels of machinery, like the still-operating Mill itself.

Where to stay

If you want to experience Port Alberni’s cultural hub, where quirky independent art galleries line up beside niche boutiques and relaxed family-run restaurants, then stay in the area known as Uptown, or South Port. There’s a theater here too, which provides an artsy and refined nightlife. Central Port Alberni, meanwhile, is perfect for families who want to unwind in a quiet city atmosphere, but also want easy access to the city’s adjacent, relaxed nature parks and walking trails. Serious hikers looking for the full Alberni Valley experience should split their time between the city and the rugged campsites in the Mt Arrowsmith or Pacific Rim parks.
