Ucluelet Hotels

A small, fractured peninsula on the western edge of Vancouver Island, Ucluelet is one of Canada’s wildest and most beautiful areas. Few places in the world can match it for its whale-watching opportunities, and whether you want to kayak, surf, climb mountains, or simply sit outside a wooden cabin in the middle of a pine forest, this natural playground can deliver. Pristine beaches untouched by tourism curve around bays, white waves crash into cliffs, and black bears roam the forests.

Things to see

Apart from the natural, wild beauty of the landscapes, the wildlife is the major attraction in Ucluelet. Numerous companies provide whale-watching trips, where, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot Humpbacks and Killer Whales, among others. Wildlife tours will introduce you to more of the natives: sea lions, otters, and black bears. For guaranteed aquatic life, visit the Ucluelet Aquarium, where local marine species are caught at the beginning of the season and released at the end. One of the best walks is the Wild Pacific Trail – a gentle, well-maintained path through forest and along craggy cliffs, where waves crash and swirl beneath you. The path is dotted with benches to just sit and take in the view. Ucluelet is rich in art, with numerous galleries all over the peninsula. Then, in the evening, the sun offers artistry of its own as it paints the sky and sea with its glorious colors.

Hotels in Ucluelet

In-keeping with the charm of the surrounding wilderness, Ucluelet has rustic lodges and guesthouses rather than chain hotels. The cheap Ucluelet hotels tend to offer simple, comfortable rooms, often with WiFi. Pools and sauna facilities are also widely available. At the top end of the price range, the more upscale hotels provide high attention to detail, with wooden beams, wood-burning stoves, and incredible mountain or sea views. There are a couple of spa hotels in secluded woodland retreats, where you can unwind and be completely pampered - there may not be much glitz or glamor but there’s still plenty of luxury.

Where to stay

Ucluelet is a small and perfectly formed section of British Colombia, so it’s hard to go wrong - the reason people come here is for the wilderness, and wherever you stay, you’ll be surrounded by it. If you want to be close to the main attractions, such as the aquarium, then stay close to the center on the northeast side; if you’d rather be completely secluded and have the best sunsets, stay in a luxury resort on the southwest side. There are also a couple of places to stay further north, right at the edge of the Pacific Rim Reserve.

How to get to Ucluelet

Ucluelet’s main draw is the fact it is so remote, therefore getting there takes a bit of planning. The closest international airport is Vancouver. From there, one option is to drive, taking a ferry across to Vancouver Island and continuing the journey by road. The other is to take a local flight to one of the airports on the island – Victoria, Nanaimo. and Comox airports all receive flights from local destinations. If you’re coming via Seattle, this is also an option. In all, allow about 5 hours for the journey from Vancouver - and prepare for a breathtakingly scenic drive.
