Edmundston is an ever-popular stop-off for tourists traveling through Eastern Canada towards the Maritimes. But with numerous quaint historical attractions, beautiful parks and gardens, and excellent winter skiing, it's a fantastic destination in its own right, well worth a longer visit. Be sure to sample the region's unique cuisine, which draws on Edmundston's rich French heritage. The local specialty is the 'ploye', a delicious buckwheat pancake served with butter, molasses, sugar, or maple syrup.

Things to see

Les Jardins de la Republique Provincial Park is a beautiful recreation space and campground situated on the banks of the Madawaska River. With picturesque hiking trails, a swimming pool, tennis and volleyball courts, and extensive kids' play areas, there's enough here to keep the whole family occupied for days. Also on site is the wonderful New Brunswick Botanical Gardens, which is home to an astonishing array of plants and flowers from all over the world. Be sure to check out the stunning Butterflies of the World exhibit, where you'll find hundreds of brightly hued butterflies flying around a lush display of tropical plantlife. The nearby Antique Automobile Museum is a must for petrol heads and history buffs alike. The extensive collection of beautifully preserved classic cars include an extremely rare New Brunswick-built Bricklin. If you're visiting in winter, Mont Farlagne offers fantastic skiing and snow tubing.

You can fly to Fredericton from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Halifax, while Jean Lesage Airport receives year-round flights from destinations all over Canada and the US, plus seasonal flights from Mexico and France. Both airports are around 3 hours by car from Edmundston. There are also long-distance buses from Quebec and the Maritimes.
