A breath of fresh air in Eastern Ontario, Perth is small but perfectly formed, with a mix of historical buildings, wholesome outdoor adventures, and family leisure activities. Located between lakes, where the Rideau River meets the Tay, water-based excursions are popular, and the fishing is particularly renowned. On dry land, there are plenty of ways to get active too, whether you go cross-country skiing in the winter, or hiking among the colorful blooms of spring. Perth really is a year-round destination.

Things to see

If you’re a fan of shopping in markets and artisanal workshops, then the City Center of Perth is a great place to pick up some treasures. You can browse heirlooms at the Perth Antiques Flea Market, or pack a picnic from the fresh produce on offer at the Farmers’ Market. With food sorted, you’ll be ready for an excursion. For a taste of Perth heritage, head to the elegant Perth Museum, inside a restored manor house. As well as period rooms authentically furnished, there are quirky exhibits, such as a very old piece of cheese, saved from the Mammoth Cheese, produced in 1893 for an agricultural exposition. Nearby Stewart Park offers an idyllic day out, with acres of green space bordering the gently meandering Tay River. For more of an adrenaline rush, you can head further out to hit the hills or the river for outdoor sports of every variety.

There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance, so if you don’t want to self-cater, you can enjoy sampling the local cuisine. Many other attractions along this stretch of the Rideau River are a short drive away, including the capital, Ottawa, in case you want a bit of big-city excitement. For a hotel right on the lake, stay in nearby Smith Falls, just the other side of the Lower Rideau Lake.

How to get to Perth, ON

Located just over an hour from Ottawa, Perth is easily accessible. The most convenient airport is Ottawa International. From there the quickest and easiest way to travel to Perth is to hire a car at the terminal. This will also give you the freedom to explore this wild and sparsely populated region. If visiting in the winter months, make sure you have a vehicle which can handle snowy conditions. The other main option is a daily bus from Ottawa’s Central Station direct to Perth. There are frequent shuttle services from the airport to the bus station by dedicated airport buses.
