Just west of Calgary, the small commuter town of Cochrane often attracts visitors who want to see the city, but would rather stay in a friendly, laidback area. The modern Cochrane Arena has an impressive ice hockey rink, where you can see local teams battle it out in Canada’s national sport. There are also plenty of other cultural and sporting events, and you can even drop into ice skating sessions to enjoy a spin around the ice. The Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre also has an ice hockey rink, with lessons for different age groups running throughout the year, and a colorful play center where you can drop off younger kids while you skate. Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is just outside the town with long, mostly flat trails zigzagging through the hills. It’s ideal for hikers and mountain bikers who enjoy a sedate pace, although there are plenty of more challenging areas for the physically fit too. Downtown you’ll find the Studio West Bronze Foundry and Art Gallery which features many impressive bronze sculptures, as well as a wide variety of works from local and international artists housed inside this small, unassuming building. The Cochrane Mosaic Murals are also not to be missed, with intricate, colorful murals made up of dozens of individual paintings, meaning you can appreciate the artwork on many different levels. Cochrane Airport is just a couple of miles north of town, and mostly caters for private and business jets. However, Calgary International Airport is only about half an hour drive away, and there are plenty of car rental desks and shuttle buses running from the terminal. Cochrane also has several taxi services, many of which offer a flat rate fee for transfers to and from the airport. The nearest Greyhound station and train stations can also be found in Calgary, with easy transfers available on the Southland Transportation commuter service which takes around 90 minutes with plenty of stops along the way.
