Ladysmith Hotels

Ladysmith is a quaint old-world town set on the sun-kissed eastern shore of Vancouver Island, in Canada’s British Columbia Province. This historic town, untarnished by the mass tourist trade, provides a quintessentially rustic vibe, with heritage buildings, a nearby marina, and a traditional main street lined with independent stores. Ladysmith is also surrounded with lush stretches of natural beauty, from ecological reserves to enormous provincial parks. With so much on offer in such a small space, Ladysmith is a town full of surprises.

Things to see

Spend your morning in central Ladysmith, soaking up its top sights and infectious community atmosphere. Begin with a stroll through the heritage main street, a stretch of timbered 2-story stores, including antiques boutiques, vintage shops, and picture-perfect bakeries. If it’s a sunny day, head down to Transfer Beach, where the soft powdery sands are perfect for an afternoon picnic or sunbathe. The more adventurous can rent a kayak at the beach, and take it out on the pure-blue waters. After, experience some local art at the Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery. This gallery - set in a disused railroad building - provides exhibition space for inspired regional and national artists, whose achievements range from gorgeous glasswork to watercolor landscapes. Of course, Ladysmith offers plenty of outdoor activities. Families can stroll through the relaxing oceanside Marine Walk, while serious explorers head to Cowichan River Provincial Park, a colossal expanse of unblemished woodland.

Hotels in Ladysmith

The hotels in Ladysmith provide idyllic 3-star accommodation, perfect for a romantic getaway. Stay in a 3-star Ladysmith B&B and enjoy free filling breakfasts, huge rooms with opulent, Victorian-style decor, and enormous adjoining grounds with flower-flecked paths leading down to the waterfront. For something slightly different, stay in one of Ladysmith’s nearby campgrounds. Enjoy family-friendly sites nestled within rich woodland and based beside pure glistening creeks, or head to hillside campgrounds with glorious views across the shimmering waters and Gulf Islands.

Where to stay

Central Ladysmith, with its abundance of marina-side seafood restaurants, casual bistros, and welcoming pubs, is the perfect setting for couples and families alike. There is a peaceful, residential vibe which creates a family-friendly atmosphere, and the marina, beach, and parks provide plenty of gentle footpaths for romantic evening strolls. North of Ladysmith, towards Nanaimo, you’ll find a grouping of paradisal coastal parks that provide campsites beside lakes and magical coves - another great family area. Dedicated outdoorsy types, however, can split their time between central Ladysmith and the secluded campsites in Cowichan Park.

How to get to Ladysmith

Ladysmith is based just 9 kilometers south of Nanaimo Airport, a tiny, stress-free airport that provides quick flights to and from Vancouver International Airport. You can fly in to Vancouver International from plenty of top US cities - like Chicago and Los Angeles - and European destinations like London and Amsterdam. The connecting flight to Nanaimo takes a mere 25 minutes, and there are several a day. At Nanaimo Airport, you can rent your own car or take a taxi to Ladysmith, just a 10 minute drive away. While you’ll not be doing much driving in Ladysmith itself - the town is easily explored on foot - you may want your own rental car to drive to Cowichan, or to explore other parks in the surrounding area.
