Brussels Hotels

The unofficial capital of the European Union, and host to many major political events; Brussels is a busy and important city, with major events, conventions, and festivals going on all year round. Brussels has perfectly preserved buildings in classic styles, with grand, opulent churches and palaces, as well as more modern areas that showcase the city's love of cutting edge design. It's also an important center for culture, from highbrow to contemporary, with live music performances and art from around the world.

Things to see

The grand Neoclassical Palais Royal is still the official home of the Belgium royal family, therefore it's only open during the summer months. However, it's free to enjoy during the limited opening hours, and you can tour the impressive rooms with their high ceilings and huge artworks commemorating the rich history of the monarchy. By contrast, the Brussels Expo has a sleek, modern look, although it actually dates back to the 1930s, and you'll see 4 statues looking down at you from the rooftop as you approach. Inside, there are huge exhibition spaces for all sorts of events, from trade fairs to pop culture conventions, with plenty of facilities such as hotels and restaurants right next to the complex. The Constant Vanden Stock Stadium hosts Belgium's national football team, as well as local R.S.C. Anderlecht team, and is a great place to see a thrilling European soccer game during the season. A small attraction that's often photographed is the Manneken Pis Statue, a small bronze figure of a boy urinating into the fountain below. The statue has long been an important part of the city that delights tourists, and you'll often see him dressed in seasonal outfits.

Hotels in Brussels

There's a wide selection of hotels in Brussels, from affordable hotels for backpackers, to 5 star luxury for business or vacations. If your budget is somewhere in the middle, then you'll enjoy a large choice of chain and boutique hotels with clean, comfortable accommodation close to the city center. You'll enjoy plenty of extras included in the package, from free WiFi to complimentary continental breakfasts, and many places have restaurants and bars just steps from you room. Most hotels have multilingual staff to help you book tickets and tours, and can help you make your way around the city by booking you a car.

Where to stay

Grand Place is an opulent town square, surrounded on all sides by important buildings from the town hall to the Museum of the City of Brussels. The large guildhalls have also been turned into museums, and there are several small streets just off the square named after various products that used to be sold in the lively markets. Every 2 years, the floor of the square is turned into a live flower carpet for the month, with vivid colors and a heady scent. The modern and stylish European Quarter is where you'll find the European Parliament and other important government building, with the Place du Luxembourg offering a wide selection of international restaurants and bars that are often full of politicians and journalists relaxing after work.

How to get to Brussels

Brussels Airport has flights arriving from around the world, and is just a 20 minute taxi ride from the city center, with easy access to the highways. There's a train running direct to Brussels Central which takes about 15 minutes, and to Brussels Midi station which takes 25 minutes, both avoiding the city center traffic. Arriving via train is a popular option, as Brussels is so well connected to the rest of Europe. Brussels-South railway station is the biggest rail hub, offering services on Eurostar to Lille and London, as well as TGV lines to Amsterdam, Lyon, Nice, Antwerp, and many other major cities.
