Excellent stay

Nice, clean and handy to get around Newark. Rooms are big and plenty of space, no issues whatsoever. Will book again.

Like the security for the rooms, the facilities and being able to put an evening meal together rather than paying to eat out. Also as i currently work in Newark it's very handy for that. Not to be put off but it's also very handy for shopping, eating and drinking also both the train stations ate within walking distance with Castle Station closer than Northgate. No doubt i'll be sraying again soon.

Handy for town, large rooms and facilities. Not spotlessly clean but better than other places and nothing to worry about.

Terrible Stay - Avoid

Terrible Experience. Arrived but could not get in as the codes would not work on the key pads into rooms. Rang to get new codes and the didn't work either. Finally managed to get into the room and it was a disgrace. Very clearly the room had not been serviced since the last guest. Bed was all over the place with furnishings and dirty towels thrown all over the floor. Toilet was full of urine and faeces, dirty towels thrown on the floor. After a long day work everything you do not want to turn up to. How this place has the rating it has is beyond me, I would avoid at all costs.

Nice Break in Newark

31 Castle Gate gave us a very clean and comfortable 2 night stay . Private and quiet accommodation clear instruction re parking facilities. Easy access to shops, cafe and relaxing meal/ drink in the evening sat by the canal. Initial access wasn't granted by the code given but a very quickly answered call gave us access for the stay. Thank you to Daniel - very helpful and he also checked in with us to make sure access was ok . Would use the accommodation again .

Shoulda got a Travelodge!!

Ok, the positives. We were in Magnus suite which was warm & spacious with a comfortable bed. The kitchen appliances were nice & looked fairly new. The building is very well located for the town and is opposite the Registry Office. But If you are arriving in the pouring rain & dark as we did at 4pm this place is very difficult to find, not sure even the locals know it's there! Black plaques on black doors are not easily read & we walked past it at first. There's no parking, which we were aware of and you are given suggestions where to park, one of which is free overnight. This is a pub and easily missed if you are in a flow of traffic. We eventually found a car park 5 minutes walk away & reasonable for 24 hours. We found we were able to get into the courtyard but not the suite! It's a press button pad and after several attempts we rang the help number, need to press the buttons lightly. Once in, soaked through, all we wanted was a cup of tea, no tea bags, Luckily we had taken 4 tea bags just in case, but could only have the 1 cup. Washed up the mugs, no drying up cloth, and the wash up liquid container was sticky &less than half full. Also a dirty serviette on the table. The bathroom is small there's a heated towel rail but the loo seat was a bit skewiff. The toiletries were well used! In the morning a shower, but shower gel container was empty! The plug thing wouldn't stay down in the sink, we found a pebble stuck in it. Attention needs paying to the cleaning!

2/10 Poor

The room was filthy, looked like it has been used and mattress were only tied up to make things seem alright. Floor had earings and dirts from previous stays, drawers were misplaced like someone was in the room previously. There is some “mysterious” wooden door in the bathroom which is locked and can’t be opened, which I couldn’t actually tell what was behind it, but it was pretty freaky. In addition, kitchen unit looked dirty and dark with no light to be turned on(lamp was burnt). After all that the room didn’t even have an inside lock while the way to enter was a passcode!!! (Anyone who recently stayed there could break in easily), felt really unsafe. I didn’t stay there more than 10 mins and I had go searching for another place to stay in the middle of the night.(when I “checked in”) Anyways, terrible, unpleasant experience

6/10 Good

Really nice building and on initial glance the room was great. Great size and lots of space with kitchenette too. Location great and parking round the corner was £3 for overnight so can’t complain at that! I’d recommend the apartment overall but there were a couple of reasons that I would mark it down: grout in the bathroom was dirty, a dirty sock in the bed drawer, guests clothing in two drawers which they had left behind.

Can be better

It will be nice to have a small dining table and it will be handy if there’s a small cabinet or shelf next to the bath tub A bit noisy too The bunk bed doesn’t feel very stable

Ok, but not again.

Bed was great for sex I absolutely smashed my girlfriend all over the room but sadly when I was having a shower, the handle fell off and also the door nob to the hallway/room was already broken off. The radiator was on some weird timer. (Couldn’t find the thermostat) microwave and kettle were sound and also the plates and cutlery were also clean. There was also one corner piece of rubbish which wasn’t mine.

10/10 Exceptional

Lovely place to stay and very central to Newark town centre and the castle. We got an upgrade to one of the suites which was perfect as it had a microwave, kettle and toaster as well as a fridge. We were also provided with a high tech fan so we could keep cool in the heat wave! The bed was super comfy and everything was super clean. They even arranged a travel cot for us so our little boy had somewhere safe to sleep whilst we stayed there.
Zeme, 2-night trip

2/10 Poor

First we did not expect an unstaffed property. Second, the digital entry system did not work, so we were stuck trying to get hold of a building manager to get into our unit. It was a very very hot day and there is no air conditioning, sealed windows - they could be opened if repaired or paint scraped to open them. Cob webs on the windows, and you look out one of the windows to see barb wire for security I guess. No this is not what we expected. This is an air bnb operation - when we saw guest house, we expected a staffed operation. Shame on us.

No.31 Castle Gate review

Everything was as it looked in the pictures, beautifully presented and clean. Parking was a bit of an inconvenience but the location of this apartment was so convenient for the wedding we attended, as well as being super close to all the food spots and tourist attractions. The only complaint we had was that the mattress was just awful, and there was no headboard which affected our sleep/overall stay. My mum also stayed on the floor below at the same time as us also had a terribly uncomfortable mattress. Road/street noise was also very noticeable.
Fantastic pub, great character and lovely food: The Prince Rupert

Great for a family

Amazing location, great apartment/suite. It is on main road so some noise but this waw expected when we saw it on maps. Could do with a more comfortable matress on main bed, and aal better clean but we would go back in a heartbeat.

I’m so glad we decided to stay at castle gate 31!

I really loved this place! Our room had a view of the castle across the street… it was sooo close to everything!! The square was moments away… so many places to eat and close to all the historic spots of the town… I love Newark and will absolutely stay at castle gate 31 again on my next trip to town… Daniel was very quick to respond to some last Minute questions a out the space and local needs … thanks for great trip to Newark!!

Nice property and layout. Daniel very helpful pre-stay. Rather noisy even middle of night being right by main road. Sadly bed very uncomfortable and caused backache, also synthetic duvet cover. Everything else lovely but better bed needed.

Wonderful Place

This place was truly lovely, well located in the middle of the town. It is directly across from Newark Castle and its grounds, which are absolutely stunning. Check in and out of the property was seamless. You are sent all your information for access prior to the stay, so when you turn up, you can pretty much just walk right in and settle down. There wasn't a reception area or anyone around who worked there, but there were plenty of contact numbers provided on-site and in our information. It is nestled right next to many bars and restaurants, so you won't be without choice for places to go for food. It was just nice not having to walk far to get to transport or other conveniences as well. We had two rooms booked/ One of the standard double rooms came with a sink and fridge, the other didn't - not sure why. They were both lovely, comfortable and homely, with comfortable beds to sleep on. The rooms were spacious and minimalist, very much what was expected. Would have been happy to stay here longer for the facilities and location. A few niggles: There wasn't instructions how to operate the heating, the floors needed more care and attention for cleaning, and there was an issue of damp in one of the bathrooms, where the extractor fan was broken. Also, the free parking is limited to certain times and has VERY few spaces available - this should be made more clear. Other than that, we were very happy with our time there. Pretty reasonable costs for the facilities as well.
