Profile: Downtown Detroit

Profile: Downtown Detroit

Downtown Detroit has a steely exterior, with gigantic skyscrapers hosting vast convention centers, like Cobo Center, and Vegas-style casinos. But beyond, this hard, corporate façade softens to reveal elegant theaters, ornamental cathedrals, and the attractive leafy RiverWalk.

A standout attraction is Detroit Institute of Arts, the city’s flagship art museum, which is dominated by Diego Rivera’s enormous Detroit Industry mural, a celebration of blue-collar life. Meanwhile, pastoral pleasures can be found on the aptly-named Belle Isle, sitting pretty on the river in a flush of botanical gardens and walking trails.

    Beautiful hotel, poor service

The good: this is a beautiful hotel in a great downtown location with beautiful views. The bad: Check-in took a very long time; nearly 45 minutes of waiting in line. Clearly they are under staffed. There are approximately 8 to10 check-in desks, but only 2 were staffed. We had four people in our room, but it was only ready for two (2 towels, 2 coffee cups, etc.). Multiple calls to the front desk went unanswered, so I went down to the lobby to see if I could get them myself. Iwaited in line for at least 30 minutes this time, and asked for more towels and cups. The answer I got was that she would get me those items after she was finished checking in the people who were waiting in line (the same line i had already waited in!). I stepped aside and waited through several check-ins and finally asked again. She rudely gave me no answer, turned and walked away, returned with the items, and placed in front of me without a word. As if I was the rude one and she had reason to be impatient with me! Again, they clearly are understaffed, but that's not the level of service I'd expect at any hotel, especially this one.

    It was okay, nothing special.

We had to wait over 1 hour to check-in, and we arrived at 3:30 pm. There were only 3 front desk clerks checking people into the hotel with a line of over 150+ people waiting to check-in. The hotel room smelled of heavy sanitizer upon opening the door. The room was okay, the bathroom was tiny.

What's up with your key cards?

There was only one check in line when I got there and it stretched back into the bar, the bar that didn't have anyone bartending. I waited 30-45 minutes to check in. once I had my key card I went to use it and it didn't work, so that was another 30-45 minutes in THE ONE AVAILABLE LINE. The key cards DO NOT WORK, I had to go back and get a new card FOUR TIMES. That's five sets of cards, two cards for each sets. Ten magnetized cards wasted, not very eco friendly. We've got another room booked here in December and honestly, we might change hotels because this was a huge pain in the ass

    so-call

My so-call city view was facing the east side of the building, looking into another building and an empty parking lot. They did not have the king size bed we had requested, but gave us 2 so call queen beds. The rooms were okay, customer service was very good. Not sure if I'm coming back, its really expensive parking lot facing room!

Good hotel, check out earlier and don't do valet.

View was good, but it took until 1:30PM to check out because the elevators were so backed up and chevk out was at 11am. They also turned off our cards when we finally were able to make trips to put stuff in our car. Also, don't use the valet at the facility, it's robbery for that price and there's cheaper parking that allows you to get your car and leave when you want instead of setting limits.
