People outside making a lot.of noise but other than that it was good.

Bad customer service
Although the hotel was clean and the room was nice. We received poor customer service and little help figuring out transportation. I put in a request to be on a high floor, far from the elevator, received a confirmation for my request but we were placed on the 2nd floor right by the elevator. The staff wasn't very helpful to English speakers.

Perfect location to tour downtown San Jose
We stayed two nights at the Balmoral upon arriving in Costa Rica. The hotel is well located for walking around the downtown and seeing the main tourist sites. The room was comfortable and clean. We overlooked the pedestrian street, which can be noisy with vendors, but by closing the door to the balcony it shut out the noise. We had drinks at the restaurant connected to the hotel, but we found the service to be very slow and inefficient. The buffet breakfast in the morning was good and quick, since it was self serve. The only minor glitch we had was trying to find the entrance to the hotel. Since there are no street addresses, our GPS took us to the corner of Avenida Central and Calle 9. However Avenida Central becomes a pedestrian street at this point and you can’t see the sign for the hotel. After leaving my husband in the car, I ran down the street and found the hotel lobby, which is on the second floor, and got directions on how to access the parking garage (which is off Calle 7). We were happy that parking was provided for free in a secure area adjacent to the lobby. A simple solution would be for the hotel website to provide detailed driving directions on how to find the entrance to the garage.

keep Looking
We landed at 9:30pm and it took almost 2 hrs to get out of airport. We were told that we would have a pick up at airport. They didn't show up!!! Called the hotel several times,, No answer? We took a Cab and when we arrived 2 people behind the desk said they new nothing about picking us up?! The room was very small, had no water pressure, and one window looking at water pipes. The noice starts very early with the thin walls.

Great hotel right in the middle of everything.
Great hotel close to everything. We had a suite with a balcony overlooking the street. Great restaurant area and awesome breakfast buffet. Staff fluent in English and were very helpful with taxi's and such. We were just a couple blocks from the great Xmas parade, It was a pleasant surprise. This was one of only a few hotels that will provide a third bed in the room.

A layover in downtown San Jose
A very nice hotel in the center of the action aka pedestrian shopping area of downtown. As the hotel fronts on to a pedestrian zone, accessing by car can be tricky as you have to access via a side street which was the only hiccup we had with our stay - service was great as was our room and breakfast was also excellent in accompanying restaurant.

Great stay
The hotel was great...friendly staff, great location, good breakfast. I had chosen the hotel for the location and because hotels.com listed it had a hotel shuttle. They do not have a shuttle, but arrange a taxi (cost of $30 to the airport).

Great location, so-so hotel
Balmoral is a perfectly-located hotel for all the sites of downtown San Jose. Quite clean and the beds are comfortable, rooms spacious. Front desk was helpful, depending on who was on, but all-in-all, not as aware of North American hospitality standards (eg. "suites" generally only offered 2 bedrooms and no living space; forgot to tell us breakfast went to 11:00 a.m. ONLY on weekends). Maybe this is normal in Central America? Still, hard to understand an "excellent" rating on hotels.com.

Great hotel that is centrally located.
Overall it is a pretty decent hotel that is centrally located. Easy to walk around and get to main tourist attractions. Breakfast and hotel facilities were good. They arranged for a driver to come and pick me up from the airport.
