Swimming in Luxury, Drowning in Fees
As a husband who spent five days at The Phoenician in Scottsdale with my pregnant wife, I have mixed feelings about the resort. The location is perfect with easy access to the airport, shopping, and great restaurants. However, the prices are extortionate, and the additional fees and charges are annoying. On arrival day, they delivered a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling cider and sweets, which was a nice touch. The staff was exceptional, and our Grand Room with a pool view was comfortable. The pools were great, and the grounds were beautiful. The prices at The Phoenician are steep. Our room rate was $700 per night, and additional fees added up quickly. There's a daily required resort fee of $45 per day, and a daily rate of $85 for occupancy/tourism fee. Daily parking fees and room service charges are also high, delivery fees, 22% surcharges and blank tip lines begging to be filled in. The spa prices are crazy, and we were shocked by the bill for my wife's 80-minute facial, which ended up being $400 with an additional $80 surcharge. We had expected it to cost around $200-250 and should have asked before booking. While The Phoenician provides a great experience, the value for money just isn't justified in our eyes. We won't be returning unless the nightly rate ever gets down to $400-$450. Although, if you're swimming in cash and don’t mind fees, 22% surcharges, and ambiguous tip lines don't faze you, I'd recommend it. Just be prepared to swipe that credit card.
