STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK
The trip started off OK. The hotel is situated up in the mountains and a bit further from town that I normally like to stay. On our second night, someone claiming to be affiliated with the hotel contacted us. They claimed to be part of a drug cartel and that a rival drug cartel was staying in our hotel. I would not have believed them, but they had the following personal information that only the hotel would have: my phone number, our passport information, the room name (the hotel uses people's names rather than a room number), and obviously, the name of hotel. You hear of things happening in Mexico (muggings, shootings, tour buses being stopped by thieves, and so on) so I was safe rather than being sorry. I immediately texted a friend to let him know of a "drug cartel" at the hotel. Since it was after midnight, we had to wait it out. The scam artist would not let us use our phones and kept us on video phone. Initially he wanted to keep us safe by getting rival cartel out of hotel, then it turned into us proving we were not part of any illegal activities. We had to provide proof of our innocence by providing contacts which they used in an attempt to get kidnapping money out of them. Eventually, my friends figured things out and was able to get management to check on us. The hotel is refusing to give us a refund even though someone on their staff is stealing guest information. Our family has contacted FBI and my roommate has contacted local authorities. STay at your own risk!
