Profile: Gamla Stan

Profile: Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan, in central Stockholm, is known for its narrow cobblestone streets, winding alleyways, and historic townhouses. It’s pleasantly walkable, and a stroll will carry you past cozy restaurants, beautiful churches, and the Royal Palace.

Near the Royal Palace is Stortorget Square, the district’s hub, which is ringed with cafes and hosts the Nobel Museum, the Swedish Academy, and a popular Christmas market. Gamla Stan has plenty of restaurants, but it’s worth making a special trip to Den Gyldene Freden, the oldest restaurant in the world with an unaltered interior.

Cozy and perfect. Located in the old section of Stockholm it is situated perfectly to wander the streets. The breakfast is yummy and they accommodated my gluten free diet. Wish I could have stayed longer.

This is a gem in old town. It has the chara ter of living in a period place. The staff was so helpful and charming.

The best part of the hotel is the very friendly and accommodating staff. Although the building is on a narrow street with no vehicle access, the location is proximate to primary attractions. This quaint building is over 300 years old, which unfortunately results in a number of substantial safety and convenience issues in my opinion. I could not recommend this hotel to any seniors with even minor mobility problems.

Great hotel with a lot of character

An amazing hotel from 1607 right in the center of Old Town Stockholm. Very steep and narrow stairs, but the personnel gladly offered to help with the suitcases. Room was small, but had a lot of character. Excellent shower and comfortable bed. Hotel is located a 5 min walk from the subway station and near everything in Old Town.

    A gem in Gamla Stan

Hotel Sven Vintappare is a gem in Stockholm. It is a very old building, so expect slanted floors, tight staircases, and small bathrooms. None of this phased us, as we were more than happy to stay in a classic building. The breakfast each morning is served in the cosy cafe and is a delicious continental style. We loved staying here.

A friend recommended this for its charm and location but said it was "funky"--she was right! Every one of the hotel staff was marvelous--warm and capable and responsive. The breakfast was great. The bed was very comfortable but the room was so badly lit it was like we were living in the seventeenth century, with only one available plug. The hotel is very conveniently located, really couldn't be better, but the touristy neighborhood is so loud, drunken tourists shouting and loud, pounding music. If you're willing to accept these downsides, this is worth it, for its quaint warmth and fantastic hospitality.

Lovely welcome to this small hotel and breakfast delicious, but room was quite disappointing. Didn’t realize we could have asked for a superior room and that would have been much nicer. I’d say it would be worth the extra expense.

Excellent place with original wood from 1607

We had a lovely stay at the Hotel Sven Vintappare. The included breakfast was delicious and Veronica was wonderful. The heated floor in the bathroom was exquisite!

Lovely old building if you enjoy the novelty of old town quaintness rather than 100% comfort. Be aware that the hotel lies between 2 busy streets, on one of which is a late night bar. There's a narrow spiral staircase with loose slates that 'clonk' at every footstep. And the bathrooms, on the whole, are wetrooms - bijou! Very comfortable beds and functional furniture, but needing some freshening up.
