The place to stay in Kyoto
The Ryokan was exactly what we thought it would be. Japanese culture at its best. Going to Kyoto - you must stay at this private onsen.

Beautiful Ryokan within steps of Nishiki Market St
The owners of this establishment were so kind and friendly! We got to checkin a few hours earlier than their actual checkin time, but we were able to drop off our bags and come back once they were ready. Once we got checked in, one of their employees actually took our bags up and then proceeded to walk through the amenities in the traditional Japanese room (sorry, I forgot what our room's name was!). We got our room with the traditional Japanese breakfast meals, which by far is the highlight (lovely selection of protein, whole grains, veggies, and fruits -- all part of a complete breakfast!) It's also literally a half block away from Nishiki Market Street. All sorts of grab and go snacks and cute souvenirs.

Advance warning on condition of minor damage
Repairs could have been done on a cardboard panel. We could have been told of this even if it is not repaired instead of wondering whether we were the ones who made the hole in the cupboard

When we arrived, they treated us with open arms! The room was really big and clean. There's a public bath in the second floor, but there's also a private bathroom in the rooms

Beautiful space in Kyoto
We loved our stay here. Location just steps from Nishiki market was great -- we were able to walk to everything we came to Kyoto to do. The room was spacious with enough space for our 3 futons, the table, and extra space for our luggage. The second floor Japanese bath was spotless and serene (can't imagine the reinforcement that took!). The breakfasts were beautifully served and delicious. But most of all, our hosts had a warmth and sweetness that made us feel at home for our 3 day stay. Highly recommended.

The riokan is perfectly located and the onsen is comfortable. The typical breakfast is amazing, even if too early in the morning. The 2 negative points are : a bad smell next to our room on the 3-d floor ; we asked for a good restaurant, and the recommended place was the worst of all our trip, and very expensive. So disappointing!

Two Days at Kagihei Ryokan
My friends and I were hoping to stay at a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) during our trip to Kyoto and came across Kagihei. At first, we weren't going to because it was a little pricier than other hotels but we wanted a unique experience and it most other places were already booked since we were on a last minute trip - therefore we reserved a spot at the inn. We were definitely glad we did! I didn't realize that it was literally up the street (maybe a 30 second walk) from the Nishiki Market - must see shopping area if you're visiting Kyoto. Its about a short taxi ride from Kyoto station as well (roughly cost about $10-$15) and very close to Kawaramachi Station if you're taking the train. However, the most notable feature of the stay was the hospitality of the owner. Yoko was awesome and super nice, not to mention accommodating. Her English is great as well and her/staff made sure we felt right at home in Kyoto. We opted for the breakfast option (either 7:40 or 8 a.m.) which was traditional Japanese food but that definitely filled us up until lunch! There's also a small onsen area in the ryokan as well. The ONLY downside about the inn was that it had a 11 p.m. curfew which is a little bit of a bother if you're trying to explore and stay out. Its understandable because the inn is part of their home. It was almost a problem when we were trying to get back from Osaka - luckily we made it back in time. Other than that, the stay was amazing & I would definitely go back!

What a special experience to stay at this traditional Japanese guest house. The hospitality from the owners was outstanding, from warm greetings and hot tea upon arrival, to giving us a lovely gift upon departure. Make sure to book a room rate with breakfast as the traditional Japanese meal is not to be missed. The location is also perfect for exploring Kyoto-- just steps from Nishiki Market and a short walk to tons of shopping, dining and sightseeing in the Gion district. A real gem.
