Charming old place with an ocean breeze
The stay was good, about an 8 out of 10. It's an old place, lots of character and a great garden area. No A/C but didnt need it. The breeze off the ocean keeps it cool, we actually had to cover up with the provided blankets while sleeping. Great location, walking distance to the restaurants. Friendly staff very informative. Woke up for the continental breakfast around 8am but it was mostly gone by then so cant say how it was. Great place for the money spent, I'll definitely go back next time in Hilo.

Adequate but windows wouldn't shut
The Wild Ginger accurately describes itself as an old-style Hawaiian inn. It is shabby, but adequate. I would have preferred to be able to close the windows, but the bathroom hand-crank was broken and it was stuck fully open. The bedroom window was missing a piece of glass in the louvered window, so even closed, it wasn't. It was pouring rain during our visit and quite cool. I thought the breakfast was great. Fresh papaya and homemade banana bread along with fresh fruit, breads, juice (yum) and coffee. Service was great.

One of its kind
Great charming hotel with a family vibe. I met this old guy outside the hotel that we are staying in Hilo, Hawaii. He looks like he is homeless but he is surviving with dignity paying for his rent and food. However he doesn’t have much for himself. He has been making these coconut tree leaf art and placing it around the hotel and even making on demand for kids, but doesn’t sell any of them. Such a rare find in a remote Hawaiian town. It felt really good to talk to him and realize what in life is more important. To give away stuff to others without any expectation :) If you happen to visit Hilo in the Big Island, please stop by near Wild Ginger Inn and meet Charlie, who usually is by the curb making his art and share a few kind words. If you are generous, buy some of his art. He would just give them away if you can’t afford it.

Overall nice hostel for the price.

Some very good points, some not good at all.
Lots of unfulfilled potential. Great garden area and open lobby/picnic area. The building itself if shoddy. With some work this could be a gorgeous boutique hotel/hostel. I understand they have various levels of service.

Don't stay at Ginger Inn
I don't recommend this hote! Terrible service and owner is rude. Stay at the Hilo Seaside Hotel instead. Locally owned and operated with top notch service and the staff is very friendly. Highly recommended by the book Big Island Revealed.

No frills but comfortable
Little disappointed; room wasn’t made up and bed too soft. It’s a no frills hotel but clean and comfortable. Walking distance to Hilo town. Good value for your dollar; would stay again.

We only spent a night here. The room is spacious for leaving two of our suitcases out in the open. The shower is a bit small for two people showing at the same time. But overall great value. Breakfast was good. The kitchen made these special taro cakes and rice cakes for us. Would stay again!

Local place with lots of Hilo character
Interesting local-style hotel; damp, slightly run-down, Hilo feel; for example, the "exercise room" appeared to be a canopy in the garden with some weights and maybe exercise bikes. I'd probably stay again, with the important caveat that the WiFi is poor; nominally it's only available in the lobby so it's not surprising that it barely reaches the nearer rooms.
