I wanted a nice and quiet, restful long weekend for my wife. We have traveled around the world, and understand you may have to experience various conditions and make allowances. The house looks like a pleasant place to hang-out when you review their website. Are the owners having a passive-aggressive meltdown? OK, we can get by with 4 yapping dogs greeting you, but allowing the dogs to crap on the carpet at the front door each day, in the dining room where you eat breakfast is totally unacceptable. They left the doors open with no screens so your room has flies in it during your stay. The mini refrigerator in the hallway has mold in it and is unclean. The outdoor furniture on the porches is old, dirty, and falling apart. You discover the space you are staying in is where the owners must sleep when there are no guests. Plus, the place smells like one big cigarette. On top of all this, the owners acted like they could care less you were there as their guests. Feel totally disrespected. This property may have been, or could have been a great place to stay, but not today. What a shame, and shame on the owners.

Hosts rightfully proud of the monumental work which went into the renovation of this historic home. Tastefully decorated and an excellent breakfast. Cute dogs owned by the proprietor, but can get a little yappy when people come in and out. Pet lovers will have no issues though. Highly recommended for a weekend visiting Edenton.

My wife and I spent Labor Day weekend touring coastal NC. We drove slightly inland to historic Edenton, NC the second night to stay at this beautiful Bed and Breakfast. Athol Plantation is a lot of fun and a great change from the Hotel scene the night before. We arrived late due to taking longer than usual at a restaurant enroute. We called and the owners were very accommodating. When we arrived we were greeted by John. He gave us a brief tour and history of the house. It is incredible what John and Steve have done with this place. The house was beautifully and tastefully furnished. It was a comfortable place to stay and the bed was very comfortable. We awoke the following morning to the resident rooster crowing at dawn. I enjoyed the relaxing nature of the place as I sipped my morning coffee. A little later we enjoyed dining on an incredible breakfast of Eggs Benedict prepared by Steve. Steve is also an architect so I enjoyed chatting with him about the house as he cooked breakfast. This was our first Bed and breakfast experience and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The energy and the love that the owners have for this house is quite evident in their eagerness to share it with their guest. I give these guys an A+ for hospitality and making sure that everything was right!

We arrived to a chorus of 5 barking dogs who roam the house. At anytime you leave your room, you'll get barked at and nipped at. There are no keys what so ever, so everything is on a trust the world mentality. The owners left there porn videos in our room on top of the tv. Not a picture I want to imagine. Every time you move, you get barked at. Their belongings are in every piece of furniture so there's no place for your stuff. One of the owners has a friend that owns a restaurant and so he tries to sell you on it every night (another couple went after the owners made them reservations w/o even asking them. They went and said it wasn't good). On top of the dogs barking and nipping at you, get ready for the 6am wake up call by the roosters they have on site, that was awesome. The actual place is nice and it's a shame how unprofessional it is run. Did I mention the dogs and porn? Let's not forget the owners smoke in their room and of course it comes thru the vents. If you like feeling like your intruding on someone else's space and being a bother for being a customer, this is the place for you. They need to make a decision on is this a business for the customer or simply their house. The best part of our otherwise great weekend was when we were not there.

Wonderful stay at a newly renovated plantation home. The owners are wonderful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable. Close to downtown Edenton and simply beautiful home.
