why anyone running a "resort" would have a yappy dog that is allowed to bark all of the time is beyond me. If it were not for this and the employees often having loud conversations among themselves it would be a decent quiet resort. Rooms are basic with thin/open walls that allow you hear everything (good or bad) around you.

Do not choose to stay at this resort unless you are part of an organized boat tour. They are geared up to cater to tour groups passing through and not to individual bookings; we were the only guests who stayed more than one night. They were wholly unprepared for us as an independent couple, failing to reply to our messages, unable to provide help on arrival (we had to arrange our own transport to the island despite the resort having at least three of their own boats, and when we finally arrived we were left standing at the end of the pier with our luggage while the staff were asleep under the reception desk), and even unprepared to provide us meals outside of the tour group buffets. Breakfast one day was re-heated buffet left-overs. It is disappointing because they have the most wonderful, picturesque location but waste it with the worst of 'island' service and facilities, not to mention sliding in hidden charges for things like orange juice at the supposedly 'free' breakfast. They greeted the tour groups with gusto and enthusiasm but then neglected us because we didn't fit with their daily pattern. Shame.

Beautiful Location!!!
Stayed for 3 nights, was definitely a beautiful location for a great price. A minus was the sun doesn't get through for a very long time everyday due to the surroundings. Another minus is the lack of isolation between the cabanas so you can hear everything from your neighbour. Lovely seafood upon order, great staff to help you plan trips or arrange rides to and from central.

This resort is NOT on Cat Ba Island.
First of all, this resort is not on Cat Ba island!!!! Once you get to Cat Ba, you will have to take a boat from Ben Beo ferry port to the island. This will cost about 200,000 dong ONE WAY. When you get to the island, the island is not labeled with anything saying Cat Ba Sandy Beach Resort. It's called Nam Cat Island. I thought this was very confusing. The woman who runs the island barely understands/speaks english. The food on the island is not very good. I would recommend eating dinner off the island if possible. We stayed 3 days and two of the days there was no electricity (and therefore no air conditioning) in the rooms. The weather was 90 degrees plus, not including the intense humidity. I wish there was better communication by the resort that this is not on cat ba island. I feel like the listing was very misleading. The bungalows are not truly overwater bungalows, which the pictures show. Overall the location is very relaxing. It's nice to spend time on the beach and relax. But there is no evening activities, and the beach is not well lit at night, which leaves you with nothing to do. Overall, I made the best of the situation, but I expected better for the price.

Would not recommend
This hotel is in the most beautiful location, so we were able to make the best of our stay. However, the staff don't seem to bother putting in much effort on the hotel amenities themselves. The rooms were disappointing and the air conditioning that we paid extra for was limited to evenings only to cut costs, even in 30 degree weather. An employee came around with a tray of AC remote controls for each guest at dinner time.. it was a very strange way of going about it. We also woke up sweating in the middle of the night because they had cut the power to the AC at about midnight. The second night it never even came on. They didn't seem surprised when I asked for money back - he gave it willingly like they expected people to complain, but it was worth the money saved for those who didn't... They charge extra for meals too, which is silly because you have no choice but to eat at their sub-par restaurant. Same goes for transportation - you have to pay to get to the hotel that you already paid for. Then you have to pay again to leave the island...conveniently run by the same company who owns the hotel. The whole thing just felt like we were getting milked for all we were worth. You can pay the same money for a much more luxury experience in Vietnam. On the bright side, kayaking around the bay was lovely :D

Difficult to get to
This hotel is very secluded. You have to take several ferries to get there. Also, there was a possible peephole in the bedroom wall. Kind of creepy, but it does not bother me if someone wants to watch me. The room I originally booked I thought had air-conditioning, but it didn't. I had to pay $15 more for a room with air. Also the bed sheets felt like they had sand in them. I guess that's what you get when you stay at the beach. It's not a high luxury resort, but it will do for the weary traveler or Backpacker.
