Although the location was very quiet, the hotel itself was occupied by EXTREMELY noisy and inconsiderate Japanese tourists who smoked all day right in front of our room until 11:30 pm and only after we told them to shut up. Nowhere else in Japan have we encountered such ignorant people. The room was very large and appointed with the usual amenities. But sound and smoke carried through the walls into our room. It's also a bit of a hike from the ferry terminal and a taxi would help, if you can find one. The town is very, very busy, difficult to walk around but the shrines and temples are gorgeous. The food was ok and the dining room was nice. They charged for extras like coffee. On the whole I would say it is average experience at a premium cost.

Biggest room I've ever had in Japan.
The property was great. The staff were very accommodating. Don't arrive past 7:00 pm or you will not be able to have dinner there. Make a dinner reservation for the day you arrive to make sure you can eat. Very limited availability of other restaurants in the area.

Arrived on Island via ferry (only way to get there), called hotel for shuttle service - they were reluctant to send shuttle and suggested a taxi! Very expensive! But shuttle arrived in less than 5 minutes to pick up other clients and us for 10 minute trip. Very Impersonable reseption. No evening meal available on site, nothing close to eat. Fun but no certainty finding a place to eat. Ryokan experience pretty lame - if you don’t already know the protocols there was no English language assistance. Very clean but spartan, poor choice for non-Japanese speakers. Fantastic location and sights, but cumbersome to access. I would not recommend for novice Japanese speakers as a 1st Time Royakan guest.

Would come back!!!
We had a mountain view room which was Japanese style, tatami mats, paper screens and beds on the floor. It’s located on the outskirts of the town in a quiet setting, a five minute walk to the great Torii gate. Make sure you get the lady at the tourist info centre at the ferry port to call the hotel and a shuttle bus will collect you at no extra charge, too far to walk with luggage. Half board included Japanese style breakfast and dinner which were quite similar! Lots of small dishes with some unrecognisable food, some delicious - others not so! Service was great. Bathing is in a lovely warm onsen, robes and slippers are provided. Decor is a little 60/70s which I personally love and fit in with the ambience of the hotel. I consider it very good for a 3 star. We left our baggage when we checked out so we could spend the day on the island and then when we were ready to leave the mini bus took us back to the ferry. I would recommend it, it certainly did not disappoint.

Not terrible, but would not stay again...
Booked a Japanese style room which was a fun experience and very large by Japanese standards but cleanliness was lacking. Walls definitely need to be cleaned or painted and fouton was stained as was the duvet. Not a big fan of Japanese style breakfast (very funky tasting fish) but I guess that's a matter of personal taste. The hotel is cut off from the main restaurant area and taxis are limited but walking on the island is nice. Staff barely speak English. Overall, I would not stay at this hotel again.
