Location! Professional if not hospitable
Great location - restaurants, shops, airport, downtown Cleveland, Oberlin! 99% clean and staff is professional. The facilities felt new, though there's a gap in hospitality and service training. Staff didn't go out of their way to help (e.g. they don't check or greet when you walk in or exit, and there were typically 2-4 staff hanging out behind the bar talking and laughing, but you had to call them to attention a couple times). Thinking on cleanliness, I'd say everything was fine but a few things were bothersome: (1) water stain that was damp and seemed to be seeping up from the carpet by one of the beds, and (2) the gym is cramped and far too small for the way people use gyms these days - without a view or window, felt unclean, and a bit unpleasant. The first time I tried to use it, I bent down on the mat to find a worm crawling right under my nose! See attached picture. When I showed the front desk, she shrugged and said, that's just a millipede. I didn't use the gym for a couple days and when I finally used the treadmill after breakfast one day - there were 3 other people at arm's length sweating in a space the size of my hotel room. Finally, as a woman of color, I felt uncomfortable with the fact that all the front service staff were white, and all the back service staff were not. That may explain some part of my experience, maybe not. Not sure I'd stay there again given the price point and my expectations for a 4-star Hyatt.
