Vacation in Japan
Great small hotel with all modern amenities but in Japanese style. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is not abundant but just right, mix of Japanese and international styles. Coffee and tea 24/7. Sake tasting on Thursday nights. Free. Location - you can't wish for better. 5 min walk to Gion, Pontocho and public transportation. It's a bit pricey but worth every penny.

Paid too much for a smelly, damp room
Hotel location is great. Staff was very courteous. Maybe other rooms are better, but our room (the entire 2nd floor, actually) smelled musty or moldy, and our room ceiling showed water damage. Room was extremely damp, sheets and pillows were not comfortable to sleep on due to dampness. Some rooms have no windows at all, ours didn't. That made our room feel somewhat like a musty old jail cell. We decided the breakfast probably wasn't worth our time and checked out early.

I never write hotel reviews but I have to rave about this one! From the moment we walked in it felt like we were well taken care of. The location was perfect and just a short walk from the most beautiful canal in Gion as well as all the restaurants on Kyoto's river. To make matters more complicated I left a bag on the bus and Judit was kind enough to take the time to help me locate it at the bus terminal. Rooms are beautifully appointed and spotless. I highly recommend Hotel Ethnography Shinmonzen and hope to go back again soon!
