Profile: Downtown Detroit

Profile: Downtown Detroit

Downtown Detroit has a steely exterior, with gigantic skyscrapers hosting vast convention centers, like Cobo Center, and Vegas-style casinos. But beyond, this hard, corporate façade softens to reveal elegant theaters, ornamental cathedrals, and the attractive leafy RiverWalk.

A standout attraction is Detroit Institute of Arts, the city’s flagship art museum, which is dominated by Diego Rivera’s enormous Detroit Industry mural, a celebration of blue-collar life. Meanwhile, pastoral pleasures can be found on the aptly-named Belle Isle, sitting pretty on the river in a flush of botanical gardens and walking trails.

The property has so many facets - a great 50's restaurant, Karl's, on the second floor came as a big surprise, along with a cute lobby bar and coffee shop. There's even a karaoke-themed bar, which we never made it to. My first impression walking into the lobby was that it would be a small boutique hotel but there are over 100 rooms with lots of interesting layouts and attention to detail. Would recommend and return to the Siren.

Very nice decor, beautiful building. Staff were friendly and very accommodating. Not too many amenities, but not a big deal. Only complaint was room did not have enough hooks or places to put clothing. There was no closet.

  • 2.0.Poor

The building itself was beautiful, but the hotel is a ghost ship manned by no one. No room service, rooms aren't cleaned until 5pm or later, no concierge or front desk telephone, no coffee in the room, no minibar, televisions don't work - and as a cherry on top, they've charged me twice. Once at the agreed upon Expedia rate, and once at full price outside of the Expedia booking. I've received no response from the hotel and have had to take 3 hours out of my work day to dispute the charge with MasterCard. An instagrammable lobby doesn't cut it. It's a strange and empty feeling to be in an old world hotel with subzero amenities, warmth, or operational competence. It's called hospitality folks, try it sometime!

    Will be back!

This “hipster” hotel is perfectly located for sporting events. Although the room was small, the bed was excellent. Strangely enough, the waterfall shower was spacious. Wish there was a chair in the room.

Lovely place and location, a little too busy in the lobby and entrance, so much so that it's hard to into the hotel.
