Great rooms for the price.
The hotel is in a good location - close to tube station. the room was comfortable, just on the small side as expected for the price. Bathroom was completely renovated and has modern fixtures. As I explained to the desk clerk upon check out, there was a somewhat musty smell in the room upon first entering. However, aster the AC was on, the smell dissappaited. The other not so great experience was the check in process. The door says ring the doorbell, but there were two doorbells and I got no response from either. After about 10 minutes i knocked very hard on the door and someone came and got me checked in.

Not for me
Stay was OK but not great. As a solo business traveller, I wouldn’t stop again - it just felt a bit uncomfortable. In fairness, maybe if I was on holiday and wanting to get a more local feel for London, it would have felt better. However, some constructive input. As other reviewers indicate it’s a B&B spread across three floors (3 rooms/floor) above Duke of York pub (a locals ‘Queen Vic from Eastenders’ style pub with ~7 tables inside and m~3 trestle-tables outside). I’m afraid check in was a real problem giving a poor first impression. Whilst it says check in from 3.30pm, when I (& coincidentally another guest) arrived at 4pm, the pub was locked and no-one responded to the bell, knocking or phone-calls. Infact the bar lady arrived and couldn’t get in either. After ~30 mins, the door was opened from inside but with no hint of apology or explanation (the bar lady was brilliant though) – the only comment that he had been there all the time and we hadn’t knocked. Not a great start. Again as previously described the rooms are up three flights of narrow stairs that look a little shabby & dark. My room was fine - not big (low eaves made it smaller) but a double, bathroom plus kettle/coffee/tea & limited open wardrobe. Fine for one – tight for two. Bedroom walls were very thin - could hear neighbors clearly and when they came in/out of rooms late. Breakfast was served in the pub and consisted of cereal, cheese/hams and pastries/bread In summary - ok stay but not again.

Exceptional 10.0
Friendly staff the biggest selling point
We arrived in time to enjoy breakfast. It was simple but tasty. The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. I was travelling with my three year old daughter. She was made to feel welcome and comfortable. Air conditioning in the room made the stay very comfy. The room had space, a clean bathroom and safe. A small fridge would have made the room superb. Waitrose and M&S on Edgeware Rd (the Tesco is closer but Waitrose much better).

Absolute gem. Auch lovely rooms and staff. We will definitely return again soon. Really pleased with the design of the rooms. Great air conditioning which was unexpected too. Fantastic.

Comfortable room but cleaning needs work
We stayed for 3 nights. The room was comfortable and a good size as London hotel rooms are often very small. On arrival, the stairs up to the room and the room itself were very dusty and appeared to not have been cleaned properly for some time as there was thick dust on the mirror frames and skirting boards. The shower surrounds were also dirty, but the rest of the room was ok. One beside light did not work and in the morning we suggested they could do some dusting and repair the light. The dusting was done, but the light not repaired during our stay. The bed was comfortable and the shower modern and large. As with many hotels, small towels are provided and changed every day. During our stay the handbasin was never cleaned, nor was the shower. The staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms are above the Duke of Work pub which has a great wine list, choice of beers and food (although we did not eat there). There was no problem with noise from the pub at any time and continental breakfast is included although we did not eat it as we wanted to eat out for breakfast. On the last evening of our stay, they finally hoovered the stairs and tidied the place up. As a B & B owner myself, I struggle to understand how simple steps such as hoovering and dusting are missed as it gives a really bad impression of an otherwise lovely place to stay.
