About this chalet

Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal and close to many of the most popular amenities the region has to offer . Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee in our covered gazebo or in the 25 sq. metre sunroom. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation!

Although our small stretch of the road is usually in good shape it is steep and the road coming into El Castillo is very rough. We highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle for all your excursions in Costa Rica. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience.

Now-Book Local Tours and Attractions: Hannah and Tomas, our on-site hosts can help you book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zipline tours, hot springs spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask when you arrive and we can make recommendations and reservations for you.

July 2011: If you catch the new reality show 'Love in the Wild' airing on CTV in Canada or NBC in the US, you'll experience life in El Castillo. They were filming the series when we visited in March and almost all of the scenes were shot in and around our little neighbourhood.

Beautiful Home on the mountain overlooking Lake Arenal

We had a wonderful time staying in this home. The view of Lake Arenal & Arenal Volcano were amazing. The beds were super comfortable and the house had everything that we needed. We really liked being away from the hustle of La Fortuna, but close enough so that we could visit for excursions and shopping. Staying in El Castillo is like staying in a small Costa Rican village. We visited three restaurants in the area and they were all very good. Pizza John's, La Ventanita, and Soda La Mesa de Mama were all very good . We visited La Ventanita twice. We really liked their nachos and burritos. We dealt mostly with Anita during our stay. She was very helpful. She also showed us where we could hike down to the river. It was about a 10 minute walk and it was worth it. The local people were all very friendly and would wave to us as we drove past. They are building a house right next to this one, but we never had any issues with construction noise. We also didn't really see the construction because the house being built sits below this house and the landscaping is so nice and lush around the property that it hid the new construction mostly from our view. The area is very beautiful and very peaceful. We really enjoyed it. I was slightly concerned that the house didn't have air conditioning, but it wasn't needed. There were ceiling fans throughout the house and it was cool enough at night to where it never felt hot or muggy. It would have been nice to have a fan in the upstairs porch, but it wasn't a problem. I would stay in this house again and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. If you are looking to get away and experience small-town Costa Rica with beautiful views and nice little restaurants then this house and town is for you.

    Heaven on Earth

Absolutely stunning views and great location. As everyone has mentioned the last 900 yards of the drive is very rough and needs a 4 wheel drive. Location is far away yet close enough for activities. Loved our stay.

    Belle expérience

Nous avons aimé notre expérience, villa propre, conforme au photo pour location. Pas de climatisation mais comme le soir c’est plus frais, nous avons super bien dormi. Lea locaux sont sympatiques, bon restaurant près de la villa. Villa a recommander

    Gorgeous views

The house was beautiful & was in a perfect location! It was near restaurants & small grocery store but very private in the mountains with a beautiful view of Lake Arenal, Arenal Volcano & the surrounding countryside including horses & cows. The landscaping is amazing with tons of plants & flowers which attract many beautiful birds including hummingbirds & butterflies. The enclosed porch on 2nd floor was great for our rainy day because could still enjoy the view. The beds were really comfortable!! So amazing to wake up to such beautiful views from both bedrooms!! We actually got to see the volcano in full view upon waking at 5:30 am our last morning. Gorgeous!! If you walk up the road from the house, there's beautiful views of the surrounding mountains off to the left too!! We loved exploring the area including a wonderful time spent in Mistico ArenaHanging Bridges where we saw many monkeys, the free hot springs & La Fortuna. We looked forward to returning to the house in the afternoon to enjoy the views & watch the birds. In Arenal, saw a sloth, toucans & aracari just on the side of the road where we saw people stopped. Enjoyed watching the cows & horses come down the road beside our house each day. Very friendly community! We loved the pizza at Pizza Johns & the burritos at La Ventanita & had awesome authentic Costa Rican food at La Mesa de Mama. The owners were great with directions to the house & made check in & check out easy. We loved everything about our stay!

    Stunning view accomodation

We stayed at El Millon. The house is perfect, fully equipped and has amazing viev over the lake. Because of the clouds sitting on top of vulcano, we missed the panorama view. But instead we hiked and get a partially glimps on the volcano. At the end we enjoyed in hot springs.

    Superb time

I highly recommend this property for those desiring La Fortuna/Castillo /Arenol area. yes, as stated above, you will need a 4x4. Not that long to switch gears, but the area calls for it as well. The instructions to the house is point on! Thank you for that! I am glad we had straight to the house, and not Art and Herbs first. Had a hard time finding that in broad daylight ... There are many things to see and enjoy in the area. Know a little Spanish if you can; it helps. Have a wonderful time! SC, USA

    Great house for family

We stayed in the house for 4 nights and 3 days this August (2019) with our 2 kids (Age 5 and 8 years) The house is up on a hill in the little town of El Castillo. The drive from La Fortuna to the house is about 30-45 ish minutes. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is a must, as the road to the house is pretty steep and partly unpaved. We made the trip up and down the road multiple times a day, at night and in the rain with no problem though. We loved being in this quite town. The house has an incredible view of lake arenal and the volcano. The house has two bedrooms upstairs, each with a bed and bathroom. Only downside is one of the bedrooms doesnt have coverings on one of the windows. There is a gorgeous patio off the upstairs bedrooms that is screened in. Downstairs in a living room, 1/2 bath, fully stocked kitchen and dining table. Living room has a fold out couch/futon. Probably ok for a young kid to sleep on, but i doubt an adult would be super comfortable. We went grocery shopping in La Fortuna (super christian #4) and had breakfast/some lunches at home. I was worried about the lack of AC but with the screened in windows/doors open we were not hot at all. There is no washer dryer but hosts can arrange laundry if needed. If we had stayed longer I would have taken them up on that. Hosts were awesome at arranging a tour guide (Garbielle) for us. We took a tour through the arenal observatory lodge and mistico hanging bridges with our guide. We saw so much more and had a great time with these personalized tours. We also took their rec of a horse back riding tour with Lilander (stable just down the road) and that was a ton of fun, even though it rained! We would go back in a heart beat! Highly recommend!

    The views!

This was a lovely home. Clean, spacious and the hosts were helpful. The views of the volcano and lake are absolutely amazing - can’t be beat! The solitude was lovely, with birds chirping and cows visiting us every morning. My kids loved the (small) pool and watching birds and ants in the beautiful gardens. The only trade off of course is that you are a bit further away from any town, but there are restaurants really close so that made it easy. The road here is rough and steep - I would say 4wd is a must and it means we didn’t walk many places. There is no laundry but the hosts were happy to do it for an extremely low cost so that was not an issue. Great place overall - would recommend!

    Great trip with the family

We had an amazing time staying in this beautiful house. The location is fantastic with the views of the lake and volcano and we loved the little town of El Castillo. The kids loved the splash pool and spent quite a bit of time in it every day, even in the rain. We took the walk up the hill and the views were incredible. I would absolutely recommend this house to anyone looking to get away from it all. It was a wonderful experience!

Great visit to Arenal/La Fortuna area

Great place to stay, well maintained, beautiful plunge pool, amazing view from the gazebo and patio. The drive up the mountain is a little rough! Definitely heed the warnings about needing 4WD and not arriving after dark! Located very close to the ziplining at Sky Adventures which is highly recommended.
