Lovely stay in Gion
We loved staying at the Granbell hotel in Kyoto. It’s located in Gion which was perfect and a lovely neighbourhood. Super walkable to the other parts of Kyoto we enjoyed (pontocho, the river, Higashiyama, Nishiki market, etc) we even spotted a couple of Geishas. The hotel is brand new and very comfortable, it has that boutique hotel feel. Great service, we had a booking issue with another hotel in Japan and they let us use their phone and helped us resolve the issue. This hotel only offers breakfast but that’s wasn’t a problem for us as there are lots of great restaurants to choose from nearby. The yakitori Restaurant next door was awesome!

Very Good 8.0
Nice hotel in my favourite city in Japan
Excellent location in Gion, very close to the metro station. Very friendly, helpful staff and pretty good breakfast. The rooms are very well thought-out, cramming as much into a relatively small space as possible. They have communal baths on the property plus do-it-yourself laundry facilities. We had some problems with the aircon, which kept turning itself off, that they were not able to fix, which was annoying. We went to the Maiko performance in the hotel one evening. Whilst interesting, it is expensive. Very close to many fantastic restaurants in Gion and across the river in Pontocho.

The best in Kyoto
At a quiet corner but right in the middle of the city center. Easy access to every attraction. A new building with clean and tasteful interior. Unlike many other hotels in Japan, they serve breakfast until 11 and the check-out time is 12.

Good 6.0
Fantastic location, clean, disappointing service
This hotel is all about the location; right next to the old quarter and Gion, the geisha district, you will have plenty to keep you busy. The hotel is modern, welcoming upon arrival and has been kept to a high standard. Cleanliness was consistently high through our stay. The rooms feel quite small for what you pay but this was expected upon booking due to the location and after reading previous reviews. If you have more than one suitcase, you will struggle to move around in the room. There are no shelves on the walls which could have alleviated the situation. Amazing Onsen, modern, clean and very relaxing. Music and ambience were spot on. Having stayed in other hotels in both Kyoto and Tokyo on our trip, we were disappointed with the service provided by staff. The staff at the reception were friendly but were not able to provide any recommendations regarding theatre/cultural events in Kyoto. Check out was quite poor - having asked for a 30 minute extension, we were told we would be charged. We also overheard a receptionist telling another guest to move their own beds together when a mistake had been made during their booking. Overall, compared to other places in Japan, the staff could benefit from focussing on their customer service.

Great Gion Hotel
Great location and service. We came off of a cruise ship and the room was about the same size and very well organized. The basement onset was fun!
