Tried and mm eh..
This specific property runs more like a mix between air bnb and a hotel. We originally reserved a two bunk bed room cause we needed the spare floor room. Sadly they notified us weeks before that they had to change our room to a different format, with prices skyrocketing by then, we were trapped at their mercy. We still paid the same amount even though the hotel put us the inconveniences on us. The people are there to check you in and sometimes out, but are usually offsite. The toilet room is separate from the shower which is nice if multiple people are using the room, just be warned, the toilet room is tiny.

Rejoice in Kyoto
Reserved 2 rooms for a group of 6. The Korean gentleman that was working at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. It was nice to have a refrigerator, microwave, and kitchenette available, in addition to a washer/dryer. The location was great, with proximity to the train station, Nijo castle, and shopping areas.

Rejoice is easy to find, only a shortish walk from the train station. Clean room with 4 bunk beds, each with its own power outlet for charging (as long as you have a plug adapter). There was not a lot of space but if you push the table to the window, there is more than enough room to move around. Cupboard also has a shelf so 2 bags could be stored inside. Kitchenette was basic but we did not use the hot plate- also no cutlery, plates or pans (could be hired I think). Microwave worked well as did the fridge. It was fantastic having a Washer/dryer that worked well in the room (for no extra charge and washing powder provided). Room is only serviced twice a week. Rejoice is only about 600m from Nijo-jo castle and there is a bus stop 250 m down the street that connects to buses travelling to other temples also. Near the train station is a Life supermarket that has a good Ramen place across the road. Overall Rejoice Stay Kyoto Nijo-jo Minami was a good choice for our family of 4 and I would recommend it to others looking for a reasonably priced place to stay in Kyoto.

OK.
Arriving to a hotel reception that resembled a bicycle parking lot was a bit of a surprise, as was the request for payment for an early check-in. We arrived at 2:15 to be told check-in was at 4pm. In my experience, hotels generally offer a check-in on arrival if the rooms are ready, which they obviously were. I'm in the business and that has always been our practice, especially with a family group. So, a trip to Nijo Castle it was instead. The area around the hotel is quiet but with two stations nearby it's a fair location to stay. The room was clean, OK for four persons with two bunk beds. Excellent wifi (each room has its own router). Our aircon was not cool and they allowed us to move rooms, which was a good gesture, and they were very apologetic about this. The mattresses on the bunk were so thin, I actually think they were toppers rather than proper mattresses, and they were painful to sleep on after a while. Our stay was OK there and the room was good value for a family despite the previous comments, but I wouldn't choose it again.
