Caribbean Coast Hotels

The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica stretches for over 125 miles, with famous beaches, national parks, and protected areas of nature. The long sandy beaches are the biggest draw, where you can swim in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, or scuba dive amongst the rare and colorful coral reefs. Along the coast, you'll find many unique areas to explore, including indigenous settlements and traditional villages.

Things to see

The Black Sand Beach in Puerto Viejo has dark sands caused by volcanic ash, and makes for a unique, unspoiled landscape. Take off your shoes and you can feel the softness of the dark sands, and you'll be able to appreciate the site of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. Visit the Cahuita National Park and you'll be able to enjoy protected beaches with sea turtles nesting on the sands, and dense areas of lush green rainforests with monkeys, sloths, and brightly colored snakes to be spotted amongst the trees. If you really want to get back to nature and off the beaten track, then the Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo has nearly 20 square miles of virtually untouched rainforest. The area has a few small hamlets which are rarely visited by tourists, and you can enjoy hiking, perhaps spotting one of the over 300 species of birds that live in the tall trees.

Hotels in Caribbean Coast

Along the Caribbean Coast, you'll find a wide variety of hotels, depending on where you decide to stay. Some of the larger, more tourist friendly areas have larger resorts, where you'll find facilities such as outdoor pools, full service spas, beach cabanas, and restaurants. Those on a budget will find cheap hotels on the Caribbean Coast, with lodges and guesthouses just a short stroll from the beaches. Even the more isolated hotels usually have free WiFi, and extras such as breakfasts, shuttle services, and childcare available. Many places also have gardens to make the most of the spectacular locations, with terraces where you can watch the sun go down.

Where to stay

Puerto Viejo in the southeast of the country is a charming coastal town which boasts sandy beaches, clear seas, and mountain views. The town is close to the homes of indigenous tribes, and there are tours taking you on visits to their isolated villages, where you can learn about their unique way of life. Tortuguero is famous for its vast national park, which is made up of rich green rainforest, and home to long stretches of beach where sea turtles make their nests. The area isn't reachable by road, and the challenge of finding an airplane or boat is worth it to appreciate the swamps, lagoons, and serene atmosphere.

How to get to Caribbean Coast

Limón International Airport is the main entry point for the southeast, with a limited selection of domestic flights to Tortuguero, San José, and other popular destinations. From here you can pick up a taxi or shuttle service, with Cahuita National Park just a 40 minute drive away. Tortuguero Airport serves the north of the Caribbean Coast, in an isolated spot that's inaccessible by road. This airport is used by people who want to explore the nearby national park, and it's just a short flight to the capital of San José, with shuttles and tour guides at the airport to help you get started on your journey.
