The photos and reviews are deceiving. The property unfortunately is run down, the pool was dirty, the bed sheets were worn down and the rooms had a weird smell. The only good thing going for them was the staff who are extremely helpful.

Low key, chill, friendly.
Hotel Dunama was perfect for me. Low key, not too crowded. The staff was above and beyond friendly and kind. The beds are comfortable. Good food, good drinks. There is a beautiful private beach. The pool is a good temperature and very calm. Gorgeous view of the water from the top of a hill. I’d stay there again.

We arrived and they told us that there was no space, they made us wait and when they gave us a room that was not the one we asked for, it was dirty, it smelled very bad and had dirty sheets, it looked like a room that had not been cleaned for days.

I was very disappointed with the conditions of this property. Very dirty hallways and rooms. When I checked the bed sheets, they had blood stains ( old blood stains, not washed) other stains. No amenities in the room or bathroom. The towels were so old and over washed and bleached.
The views from the hotel are amazing and so is most of the staff.

I’m not sure how long it has been since the pictures of the property were taken but if you like surprises then you are going to love this place because it looks nothing like the promotional photos. The place is completely run down. Little to no maintenance/upkeep has been done for a very long time. Every one of the 5 lounge chairs at the pool had a tear in the fabric and what appeared to be mold. As you walk to your room be prepared to see trash strewn throughout the hallway. Unless you are expecting a low grade hostel be prepared to be appalled by the conditions of your room. The sheets have stains and the door to the patio did not shut completely. The bathroom appeared to be painted/caulked by a partially blind person, who may have also been the last person to clean. The only redeeming quality this place had was the private beach. But that was not without issues either. As you make your way from the hotel complex, be careful not to step on the carcasses of the crabs as it appears that their idea of artwork/extermination is to simply step on the crustacean and leave for your viewing pleasure. As you dodge the overhanging trees/vegetation on the stairs, be sure to choose the path to the left as it will lead you to the beach. The path to the right will lead you to an eroded platform full of rotted wood that may have been a nice overlook 20ish years ago before the termites and erosion took over. We checked out ASAP. Staff is little to no help with anything. DONT BOOK HERE!!!

Unbelievable view over the ocean and surrounding hills. The property was very clean. The on-site restaurant was great for any meals, snacks or drinks. We had one of the swim-up rooms, and it had everything we needed. The bathroom had obviously been renovated and updated and was very nice. My only recommendation for the hotel would be adding a safe in the room and bedside tables/lamps. There are several beaches and lots of restaurants within an easy walk (but it is on a hill, so you will earn the cervezas). Checkin/out was a breeze and all staff we met were very friendly.
My only complaint is a lack of coffee for the in-room coffee maker. We had 1 package for the first morning and were told that was it. I think for the price, that policy should be amended.
Overall I will still give it a great review.

We paid for 3 nights and only stayed for one night. Please when I say don’t stay or book here don’t. I have pictures to prove how unsafe and filthy this place is. First of all, I had to carry a 50 pound suitcase 5 flights of stairs at night. My husband was carrying his suitcase and when he walked on the tile it cracked and he sprained his ankle. Then when we got in the room it is nothing like the picture in the advertisement. It’s old and the sheets were filthy. The pillows and blood stains on them and yes I have pictures to prove it. We asked for a garden view and we got pieces of beer bottle on the back patio. Also, the receptionist was rude and not helpful. The only kind person was the waiter who started . One last thing, Trip advisor and the employees shirts need to be changed to just a hotel. They don’t have a casino at all. I want a refund for two nights that I didn’t stay and had to book a room somewhere else to feel safe and sanity. I work so hard to make this trip and was so angry at the fact that I paid for a place to stay that ROBBED me. I have Pictures and will post them. Please please do not stay here.

One of the worst hotels we have stayed at.
The room smelled of paint as soon as we got inside. We could see paint droplets on the floor also. There were lot of bugs and small flies in the room, on the bed as well. The mattress and box spring were so dirty and old, the pillows were all clumpy and the towels were like rags. We didn't even feel like using them. When we complained to the staff about the paint smell and dust in the room, they said they would send someone to cleanup, but that never happened. We asked them to move us to a different room but they said the hotel was fully booked- which was hard to believe- that entire place looked deserted. The pool was dirty and uninviting.
We had booked for 4 nights but couldn't stay beyond 1 night. Our entire family got bug bites at night. The breakfast was very limited- they could only do eggs 2 ways- scrambled or fried, they ran out of hash browns which was 1 out of 4 items in the breakfast plate. Staff seemed very limited, specially at the reception. We checked out the next day and moved to a nearby hotel which was a 100 times better.
Would not recommend this place at all to anyone.

Bedding was full of stains and blood and could easily tell they weren’t washed between check ins. Pool was full of debris and was gross. Room had lots of mold and smelt awful. Would not recommend this property at all and the price point is ridiculous for 100 more can get an all inclusive resort down the road.

No so nice, wish they invested a little bit more
The bed is hard as a rock and for someone with a bad back it’s not the best place to sleep.
They gave me two towels. One was hard as a rock like it had been sitting there for years. The second one was very rough and very inexpensive and smelled terrible before I used it to shower..
There are no nightstands to put your stuff. There is a shelf in the corner of the room that is very small and it’s across the other side of the room from the bed..
There is nowhere to put your luggage so I had to use the two chairs that went with the very small table that was in the room so if you want to eat, and you have two bags that you wanna leave open to get things in and out of you’ve got nowhere to sit.
The room is very bare. There’s not much in the room other than bed, drapes shower very small sink.
The view is beautiful. I do have to say that, but if they just invested a little bit more in the amenities of the hotel rooms, this place would be a hit and I would stay here most likely every trip I go to Costa Rica and I travel to Costa Rica about every other month.
The hallway to get to your room is very dark at night. There our lights, but you have to get to the end of the hallway before the lights turned on because they are set up for motion detection.
The staff was very polite, except for the receptionist when I was checking out the security guard was awesome and very helpful and the gentleman who checked me in was very nice and helpful as well
