Booked the private onsen traditional room. This was the highlight of our trip. Private open air tub was amazing and would recomend absolutly. Hope to be back one day for another visit

Had a great stay here, the staff is very friendly and patient as most communication is via google translate, and they are very good at making sure your stay is pleasant, especially for first time ryokan visitors. I’ve seen some folks say it is an older building, but that is its charm. When you are in the baths, it will all make sense. It was clean and the AC unit worked great. I am only sad that the chef was not working as I’ve seen great reviews about the food, but dinner recommendations were provided. Call ahead to find this out.

A beautiful experience. The rooms were very spacious and nicely decorated. The location was a convenient, short walk from the train station but still remote enough to be serene. Very friendly and courteous staff!

From the beginning of our stay, the staff went above and beyond at every opportunity to make sure our needs were met. The food was amazing! They clearly put a lot of time and thought onto the preparation and presentation. The fresh air bath was wonderful and I really enjoyed the onsen as well

So firstly this was a great hotel, in a great location, with awesome staff. In fact, I had accidentally left a backpack in a Starbucks in Kanazawa the day before and was leaving for North America in 2 days. I do not speak Japanese. The staff at the hotel actually called the Starbucks for me and made arrangements to have it shipped to my next hotel in a day and a half!! Incredible service.

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The property is traditional but tired. Ripped wallpaper, fabric chairs were ripped, and our room smelled musty. We paid extra for a private bath which was lovely but the shower room had mould. The property could be lovely but it needs some work.

A Tranquil and Relaxing Traditional Escape

My recent stay at this incredible hotel was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in an atmosphere of relaxation and traditional elegance. The beautifully designed room exuded warmth and comfort, with cozy futons that provided a perfect night’s rest. The private wooden onsen was the highlight of the experience—peaceful, rejuvenating, and impeccably maintained. The attention to detail in every corner, from the serene lighting to the spotless and modern bathroom, made the stay feel truly indulgent. The entire experience was flawless, blending Japanese hospitality with an intimate and tranquil retreat. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a rejuvenating and luxurious getaway. I can’t wait to return!

Awesome Ryokan in Hakone

Amazing stay! Had the full Ryokan experience with dinner, breakfast, and our own private onsen. The staff was super helpful and delivered excellent service. We had our bags shuttled to the Ryokan from Hakone-Yumoto and then walked ourselves later. We later learned there is an onsen shuttle that may have worked… Something to research.

Lovely place to stay - the staff were super helpful and friendly explaining how to use the on premise onsen via Google translate. Rooms are a bit tired, but clean and comfortable. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and highly recommended. The property is easily walkable from Hakone-Yumato station and has a great view of the river nearby

Heaven!

We had such a nice stay here. It was a real highlight of our trip! The staff was so kind and attentive. And the food--WOW! Our dinner and breakfast was incredible, and only made more wonderful by our private onsen. We only stayed here one night but left wishing we'd booked another night! We can't wait to come back one day. :)

Ideal for a one night stay…. The private onsen was the true highlight….The daily historic sweets set on the table in the room was a delicious welcome. The kaiseki meals the first time we ate them were absolutely wonderful….However….it was hard to eat them twice…Even though they were beautifully prepared-one can tire from fish, mollusks, fish flavored tofu, raw eggs and seaweed, morning and night…They should switch up the meals daily…Also- drinks should be brought to the meal rather than having to ask for water/tea…The staff appeared new and did not reflect the prior reviews of an elderly couple…They may need additional training….a welcome drink (water/tea) on arrival and asking about if transportation was needed to the station would have been wonderful! (We had heavy backpacks and are in our early 50’s-the mile walk (not flat) was an exercise in tolerance. Overall, we truly deem it to be one of the most authentic experiences we witnessed in Japan. And for one night the meals, sleeping on tatami mats, and private onsen would be 5 stars….For two nights-4 stars….the charm wears thin…however, the price is very fair for what you get-and may not be obtainable in the other surrounding ryokans… I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here to have the authentic Japanese experience you may be seeking…as well as having the private outdoor onsen…

The room was beautiful, our tub was massive and everything was so clean. It was peaceful and the staff were very friendly and warm. I think the dinner we ate here was on of our best from our trip. Their meals are traditional in both ingredients and setting. It was an amazing experience. If you have the hakone free pass, there is a bus stop close by, or take a short 15 minute scenic walk surrounded by canals, rivers and waterfalls to the local station where there are tons of shops and access to all of the amazing activities that hakone has to offer.
Holly, 2-night trip

4/10 Poor

Sad to say we were disappointed by our experience here - we had such high hopes since we decided to spurge & treat ourselves for a night but we felt like we didn't get to fully enjoy it. The positives were the private onsen and unit - both beautiful and lovely! But overall, felt unwelcome and unaccommodated for. Upon arriving, the first question they asked us after asking for our passports was when we would be leaving. Which may be fine under circumstances had we received a warm welcome. We arrived just after 5:30PM and were looking forward to relaxing, staying in for the night and taking advantage of our unit. Being a Ryokan, we had asked about food and were told we were too late to book anything for our stay, not even breakfast the next morning. This caused us to have to venture out for our meals which would have been fine if we had options but many places told us they were full. They gave us a list of other hotels that had food. We walked around in the pouring rain for 2 hours that night and went to 5 other hotels and were told all were "full" for the night, finally found food at an Izakaya. I wish we had known we had to book our meals far in advance before arriving. It was a struggle to find a meal during our stay. We assumed our accommodation would accommodate us and unfortunately were wrong. The wifi also didn't work the entire time. To avoid feeling hungry and wasting time finding food, pre-book your meals before arriving if you stay here!
Olivia, 1-night trip

6/10 Okay

This is a very traditional hotel: building, condition and service. We were told to be back before 11pm otherwise the gate will be locked. I understand this even though it’s hard if we need to meet friends. The hotel does not keep the baggages after we check out. Very difficult for us because the first day is pouring rain and we could not really travel in Hakone. And therefore, we either check out and take everthing with us or we give luggage’s with form at front desk for luggage delivery with @$9-16 charge when we pick up at station! We decided to check out at 7am with our belongs. I have to say, good indoor outdoor onsen, tatami style traditional overall
Ruyan, 1-night trip

2/10 Terrible

I am a native Japanese speaker, and it was my first time traveling in Japan with my kids in 20 years. To ensure that our daily plans were in order, I called this ryokan before booking to confirm the availability of meals with the Expedia plan. The owner assured me that our plan included both dinner and breakfast. However, upon check-in, they informed us that our plan did not include any meals. I explained that during our phone conversation, they had confirmed that two meals were included in the Expedia plan. Although the owner remembered our conversation, she did not serve us any meals, offering only excuses instead. I was really disappointed with this ryokan. One reason for this issue might be that the owners (the Okami and Shujin) are too old to manage the ryokan operation, and there is a lack of appreciation and respect for customers. I recommend that they retire immediately. In addition, I complained to Expedia about this issue, but they did not help me at all. LOL. Here’s the takeaway: Book your hotel directly through the hotel’s website. There is no advantage to using Expedia (or other booking sites).
