The rooms have no way to be locked from the inside and you will only get one key for the room. Meaning there is no way a person can stay in the room and (safely - think of a fire or other emergency) lock the door while the other person is out with the key. This seems like a small thing but it is not and made me give the location one start only.

We were very pleased by our stay at the Altstaft. It is a small boutique hotel that isn’t fancy but it is in great condition, super clean and in a great location near Bismarckplatz, transportation and the Main Street for shopping and dining. Walkable in 15 minutes to the funicular to get to Schloss Heidelberg. Would go back for sure.

Hotels meet various needs for various travelers. If you want a small, inexpensive, comfortable and clean hotel in Heidelberg, Germany at an outstanding location near the historic center of the city, operated by a very small, hard-working honest staff, the Altstadt could be the place for you. Given these realities, the services available at upper-class chain hotels are not there. Nor is there parking on the property. But if you arrive by air and train, are self sufficient and patient, the Altstadt could be perfect. I would gladly stay there again.

The check in process was terrible. We were not given a booking number from expedia only an itinerary number. So we could not get our key. We had to pay roaming charges and call expedia to get assitance because we could not contact anyone using the phone number provided by Altstadt because it is just an automated message that hangs up at the end. There is clearly a miscommunication between Altstadt and expedia because we were not given the correct information to properly check in and it was a poor experience for us.

Can't physically get into Hotel
We couldn't get into the hotel. We were later told this hotel has an entry code email sent to guest for entry. However this code is only on sent to those lucky enough to book on certain websites. Hotels.com is not one of them. So we showed up before the advertised check-in time to find no one at reception, a key box without a code, and a phone numer that goes straight to voicemail. Just before giving up and booking another hotel, by chance someone came by and let us in. This is not a position anyone should be put in. If there is any chance of this happing to your guest you should fix this right away. However, after going back through the reviews we found others with this issue back to 2017. We fail to believe that they are in unaware of this recurring problem. Low cost solutions that randomly leave paying customers on the street is unacceptable!

This is not a 3 stars hotel
If you book by hotels.com, no one gives you any info on how to check in if you arrive late. The reception was supposed to be open until 20:00. I arrived at 19:55 (because of late trains) and no one was there. No one answered the telephone number that is on hotels.com. I desperately asked another hotel reception to help me (I don't speak German). They finally succeded in contacting someone of the hotel (I don't know how) and they told me to use the reservation number to get the key by a machine. The number, anyway, was different from the hotel.com reservation number so still I haven't understand which number you were meant to enter... but on top of that, this is not a 3 stars hotel by far. Maximum 2. Cheap and anonymous furniture, very small bathroom. The positive thing is the kindness of the reception guy during breakfast.

A fun experience,
This is an unassuming little hotel in the most convenient spot. It doesn’t have a lobby or elevator, no refrigerator, kettle or microwave. But what it did have was the most comfortable bed, cozy suite with a little balcony and nice view out back. They washed our clothes for a small fee and were very helpful and friendly. Loved our stay,

Loved the location close to the Alstadt. We were denied breakfast because we were told that we booked with Expedia. Very important...we were told we did not need to make reservations for airport ride. Not true as we almost missed a ride to the airport. It was very loud in the alley. We did not feel very welcomed. We would not refer anyone to this hotel and will not stay there again.

Convenient, Friendly, and Clean
This is a nice hotel and close to the Bismark Platz at the beginning of Heidelberg's Altstadt. The staff was very friendly and the accommodations were nice. The bathroom was very compact for someone over 6 feet tall.(187 cm) A heavier person may not have been able to navigate it. The Wifi was also spotty which was discouraging when trying to catch up on work.

Hotel Not Recommended
We had an unfortunate experience. First, the hotel is difficult to find, they don't answer the phone, and they closed the office at 7:00 pm, leaving us on the street until 1:00 am when another hotel office clerk found us a hotel room across town. We hope we were not charged for the room. A note could have been left or an email sent to inform us how to get our key. A supervisor from Hotels.com did try to help also.

Small European-style hotel in the Altstadt
It was a lovely stay in a hotel with friendly, attentive staff. The breakfast was a typical German one--lots of Brötchen, with a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, fruit, breakfast cereals, etc. Rooms are built on a smaller, European scale, but are very clean and bright. A lovely place to stay!

Great location, good facilities
I loved the location of this hotel, right at edge of the busy old town but on a quiet side street. They were flexible about arranging late check-in, though the code I was given for the key lock box was incorrect and I needed to call for better instructions. My room was bigger than expected, and clean - but the bed was terribly soft and would have killed my back if I'd been there any longer.

Small hotel in the Altstadt
This is a cute little hotel at the start of the pedestrian zone in Heidelberg. Conveniently located between the hub of the tourist district and the hub of transportation at Bismarckplatz. We enjoyed our time here. The room was a good size for a European hotel room, with a small table, a little balcony, and a little extra room. The bathroom was tiny, but perfectly adequate. The city was unseasonably hot when we were in town, so the lack of air-conditioning made it a little hard to sleep at night. But you'll find the same problem in all but the biggest hotels in Europe. Staff was very friendly. Only slight problem we had was having just one key for our room. I was in town for a conference and my fiance joined me for the trip. Since he was touring and I was working, it was hard to arrange our schedules around one key, particularly since our phones don't work in Europe and the front door to the hotel is locked after 8pm. Other than that minor issue, we had a great time at the Altstadt Hotel and would stay here again.

Reasonably priced and comfortable.
Reasonably priced hotel in the Alstadt district of Heidelburg. It was a bit difficult to find, as the hotel sign is very small. Parking is in the paid car parks located adjacent. Very friendly staff and nice breakfast. Got there around 10 a.m. and room was ready and I took a nice nap following a very early start in Koblenz taking friends to Frankfurt airport.

Great location, too much noise from rowdy night re
Hotel is well located on the edge of the old town and ideal for the sights and many restaurants. Parking nearby is not easy ( I left my motorcycle on the road right outside but I don't think that went down well). Hotel is comfy with good beds and good breakfast. No air con so windows need to be opened at night when it is hot; unfortunately this lets in the noise of the young people who apprear to congregate near by EVERY NIGHT and make a lot of noise until the early hours of the morning.
