Nice hotel but loud nightclub next door
There is a nightclub (not prt of the hotel) playing loud music until 4 am on Saturday morning. This made sleeping very difficult. The staff were fantastic. Attention to detail on room cleaning could be improved. The free mini bar was appreciated. Nice views from the rooftop.

Failing on a few levels - not recommended sadly.
Unfortunately not such a good stay. The hotel just isn’t 5* on many levels. We had issues with the noise at the hotel, being located on a little street with a very loud bar a few doors down which made a lot of noise until 04:00 on a Thursday night. Not the hotels fault per se but they were aware of it and should have let us know or offered another room. We arrived at breakfast at 10:00 to find scraps of food and a really poor collection of food. Quality and variety was lacking for a supposed 5* hotel. Coffee was self served on a machine that was not good at all. We upgraded to a suite, no bath, a small sofa… really no point in upgrading at all. Some of the staff were lovely, as is often the case on the island. Some were less engaging and interested. There is no parking available at, or near, the hotel. 10 minute walk away.

Definitely a nice hotel with a lot of amenities offered. Location is right outside the seaside and walkable to the CR7 museum and the cable car. The only reason why I gave 1-star short of full star is that the parking is actually at the hotel of close to the hotel. There are 3 parking solutions given 1) close to the cable car station 2) parking at the Plaza Forum and 3) street parking. The only one that is “close” to the hotel is street parking and given you are in the city it’s actually quite hard to navigate and get to the street parking. The other indoor parking facilities is not 24/7. Some days it actually closes and also a bit of a walk away from the hotel so if you have luggage or other items that can’t be rolled on wheels it may take a few steps to get from parking to hotel. Otherwise it’s a good hotel, very posh. But I definitely wouldn’t say “parking is available” at this hotel because it’s 1) far away and 2) not 24/7 accessible.

Loved our stay in Barcelo. Rooms spacious and bed very comfortable, bathroom clean and good size. Perfect location for everything, the street is amazing. Breakfast excellent, all you could wish for, and very comfortable reception area. A luxurious hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. We would definitely choose to come to Hotel Barcelo again, our stay was magical! More drawers for clothes would be useful, also our shower caused water to flow on to the bathroom floor unless we put towels on the entry floor.

The hotel and room were pretty much as shown online. One small issue with bedding (which is why I'm giving only 4 stars) but that was rectified by the time we returned to room on first day. All staff very warm, friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet one of the best I have ever experienced. Great location for views, transport to and from airport and for buses to take you around Funchal. Lots of local amenities nearby. Restaurant in hotel a bit pricey but worth it for the quality of food and service provided.

The one thing we weren’t used to was when we left the room the air conditioner went off and when you return you must remember to turn it back on, we forgot a few times and the room would get warm fast! We never stayed in a room that wouldn’t allow the a/c to stay on.

The Barcelo Funchal Oldtown hotel is the hotel to stay if you want to be right in the center of the historic district of Funchal and right across from the Lido Promenade and from the Cathedral. It is walking distance to all of Funchal sightseeing sites. This is a wonderful hotel. It is very clean and nicely decorated. The rooms are of a nice size and the bathrooms are impeccable. The lobby and the bar area are lovely and spacious. The breakfast offerings are generous - with a very wide assortments of items. (They even make the omelettes and fried eggs to your liking.) The hotel has a super nice rooftop pool area (on the 5th floor), with an infinity pool and with panoramic views of Funchal. (It also has a spa and a small gym - which we did not get to use.) As this hotel is located in the very center of the oldtown, there are plenty of restaurants right outside and around the hotel, as well as many shops of all kinds (e.g., gift, clothing, gelatto stores). Right around the hotel, there is even a taxi stand and even a McDonalds!) This hotel is very well maintained (I was told that it was recently opened - so all rooms, bathrooms, etc, appear as brand new.) The reception staff is terrific, and if you have a late flight out of Madeira, this hotel has a safe room right behind the reception area where you can store your luggage after you check out of the hotel and which you can pick up before you leave for the airport. When I return to Madeira, I will definitely stay here.
