Wander through Gold Rush-era downtown where historic buildings now house shops selling everything from antique mining tools to artisanal sourdough. Columbia State Historic Park lets you pan for gold alongside costumed docents who stay remarkably cheerful despite wearing wool in summer heat. The Sierra Repertory Theatre stages productions in a converted bank where the vault now stores props instead of bullion. Veterans Memorial Hall displays military artifacts with small-town pride. Take a vintage steam train ride through Sierra foothills on tracks that once transported fortune-seekers. Nearby Yosemite attracts the crowds, leaving Sonora's New Melones Lake blissfully uncrowded for fishing and boating.

Hotel Lumberjack

Hotel Lumberjack

8/10 Good
"Fine stay, everything was clean and worked. Breakfast was sparse, waffle batter tasted like a cheap ice cream cake cone. Also, there was no milk. Pretty annoyed I was charged $6 after the fact for parking ... on a surface lot ... at a motel."

Gunn House Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"My wife and I loved our visit to the Gunn House Hotel. We met Harry who is wonderful and very helpful. And he's quite a good chef for morning breakfast. The room was clean and the air conditioner worked great. We sat outside our room in the evening with our tablets and watched all the cars go by on Washington St. I give an A+ to the staff and Harry for their great hosting. We will be back. Take care for now, Kevin & Debbie."

Sonora Gold Lodge

Sonora Gold Lodge

8/10 Good
"The Sonora Gold Lodge is one of the few remaining independent old fashion motels in the area. It is old, so you expect some quirkiness. The King size bed was new and the flooring was new. So, they have done some upgrades. I really like the fact that I could park my motorcycle right outside my room and it was very quiet. I needed a room for the night because I was in town for two events and did not want to drive the hour home between. I was looking for the most affordable room in town. The Sonora Gold Lodge was exactly what I needed. I caution you though, if you are looking for a modern, high-end place to stay this is not it. If you are looking for a clean bed and shower that is a bit retro and quirky this is perfect."
