Imaculado Coracao de Maria
Perched on the lush slopes above Funchal, Imaculado Coracao de Maria offers travellers a peaceful retreat from tourist crowds. The striking white church anchors this authentic area where narrow cobblestone streets wind between traditional homes with red-tiled roofs and colourful shutters. Quinta Palmeira's gardens provide a verdant escape while the hillside location rewards explorers with stunning Atlantic Ocean views. Family-run cafés serve traditional Madeiran fare in unpretentious settings where you'll dine among locals. Small guesthouses and private quintas offer intimate accommodation with personal attention from hosts. While steep terrain makes walking challenging, the quiet atmosphere and genuine community feel make this area worth the climb.

Old Town Funchal
Old Town Funchal charms with cobblestone streets winding past the Gothic Sé Cathedral and 17th-century São Tiago Fort overlooking the harbour. The vibrant Mercado dos Lavradores bursts with tropical fruits, flowers, and fresh fish, creating a feast for your senses. Visitors can hop on the Funchal-Monte Teleferico cable car for breathtaking views or stroll along the marina promenade watching boats bob in the Atlantic. Traditional Madeiran restaurants serve local specialties like espetada and black scabbard fish throughout this walkable district. Most attractions sit within a 10-minute stroll, while city buses connect to other Funchal areas every 15-20 minutes. Boutique hotels in converted historic manor houses offer authentic accommodations with traditional architecture and courtyards.

Sao Pedro
Sao Pedro invites you to wander its cobblestone streets past centuries-old churches adorned with intricate azulejo tiles. This charming Funchal area balances historic treasures with authentic local life. Discover Holy Trinity Church, explore museums like Quinta das Cruzes, or simply soak up the atmosphere in quiet squares where locals gather. Traditional Madeiran tavernas serve espetada and bolo do caco alongside family-run cafés perfect for morning coffee. The area's guesthouses and converted historic homes offer intimate lodging experiences with personal hospitality. Well-connected by Funchal's bus network, this walkable district makes an ideal base for exploring Madeira.
São Roque
São Roque crowns the hillsides above Funchal, offering a glimpse into authentic Madeiran living that most tourists miss. Traditional whitewashed houses with red-tile roofs cascade down terraced landscapes, while narrow cobblestone streets wind between stone walls draped with bougainvillea. Morning walks reward you with mountain views and ocean vistas that frame this peaceful residential area. Family-run tascas serve traditional Madeiran fare like espetada and bolo do caco at affordable prices. Vacation rentals in traditional homes provide an authentic experience with mid-range pricing, though public transportation is limited. The steep terrain creates challenging but rewarding walks for those seeking quiet and genuine island charm.

Reid's Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Madeira
"Reid’s Palace was such a lovely hotel - we didn’t want to leave! The ocean lounge area, pool, restaurants, rooms, and views - everything was spectacular."
NEXT - Savoy Signature
"The hotel was lovely. We had a view of the sea. The cleaners were very attentive. But maybe the hotel was designed for the younger type of couples. The music around the hotel was the same beat type music. A very big entrance/reception area and lots of chairs. Seemed a waste of space."
The Cliff Bay, by PortoBay
"Great location and a very beautiful rose garden for breakfast and lovely dinners. Rooms are large, but a little older; however, still very nice. The hotel food and drinks are VERY expensive. We are from the United States, and you can expect prices as much as New York City and Los Angeles for food and drinks. The staff was mostly friendly but not over-the-top accommodating. Morning staff at breakfast seemed irritable, and the front desk was hit or miss with friendliness"
Hotel Madeira
"In a great area, staff was friendly. Rooms were renovated with air conditioning. The bar/food on the rooftop was yummy and very affordable."
The Vine
"Had a great stay. AC went out in the entire building the last night of our stay, so that wasn't great but had an amazing stay other than that!"
Barcelo Funchal Oldtown
"Would stay here again. Breakfast amazing. Location amazing. Clean rooms."
Pestana Carlton Madeira Ocean Resort Hotel
"Loved the pool area and access to ocean fantastic"
The Editory Garden Carmo Funchal
"It’s great"
Pestana Casino Park Ocean and SPA Hotel
"Good basic 4 star hotel, as a base with a pool and breakfast it was fine for us. As long as a little tired decor doesn’t trigger you you’ll be great. Location is fantastic with a small park next door, shopping centre 5mins walk away and dozens of bars and restaurants nearby."
