You pay for what you get
Of course, this is a hostel, and it is extremely cheap compared to downtown Chicago hotels. However, when we read "detached private bathroom and shower" we understood we wouldn't be sharing them. But of course we were, bathroom and shower were shared with many adjoining units and so cleanliness left a lot to be desired. We found hairs on the pillows, the rug didn't look like it had been cleaned for a while... all of that would have been acceptable given the price (except the advertised "private" bathroom, but what wasn't was the VERY NOISY ELEVATED TRAIN going by every few seconds, late at night and early in the morning (not during the night thankfully). BRING EARPLUGS! Also, no temperature control in our room, it was controlled from another unit we didn't have access to. Otherwise staff at front desk was very nice; the contribution of $4/person/night for non-members of Hostels International was unexpected, even though it was mentioned by somewhere. Location is very good, very central.

Very easy to get around!
Stayed to tour Chicago -- do all of the touristy stuff. I was able to walk everywhere from the hostel. It was close to Soldier Field which was awesome for returning after the show there.

Liked It So Much I Came Back a Month Later
So glad I discovered this treasure. Liked my first stay so much I came back a month later. Stayed in the private rooms, once a bunk room, second time a bedroom. The bunk room was a bit small but both were just great. Never had a problem with access to the bathroom or common areas. Some noise from the el but it's Chicago in the Loop, you're going to get some noise from outside. Noise from neighbors was not a problem during either stay. Laundry facilities which is a great plus. Breakfast was just fine. A short walk to the Art Institute. Great staff, helpful, friendly and responsive. Highly recommend for any age, not just for the young traveler as I am an older woman and was traveling alone.

Nice hostel!
Big hostel with lots of great common areas. 24 front desk was nice and it was very secure with 3 checkpoints where you needed to swipe your card. Room was clean and staff was helpful. Included breakfast was OK but not amazing.

A wonderful option!
I needed to sleep for a few hours before catching a 5am flight out of MDW, and this ended up being a perfect place to do that. I've always had great experiences with HI-Chicago, and this was no exception. The accommodations were wonderful, and I appreciated being in a bunk room with an en suite bathroom. And the woman at the registration desk was incredibly friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this hostel!

Fabulous, affordable place to stay
Fabulous place to stay! The rooms are modern and clean. Plenty of bathrooms and showers. There are pool tables, ping pong tables, and free daily activities to sign up for. The location is excellent, close to Lake Michigan and an L station. Very friendly staff!

Roomy, tidy, and clean
I'm Jaruwam from Bangkok, Thailand. HI Chicago is definitely my favorite. It's very comfy as all rooms are so spacious: bedrooms, bathrooms, dining room, andcommon areas. Apparently, the management and its staff work hard around the clock to make sure that the facility is clean and tidy. Cleaning is done not only during the daytime. I saw a housekeeping staff cleaning thebathrooms when I woke up to use the hallway restroom at 3 am. one night. The complimentary breakfast has a variety of good choices. Another plus is the free activities, like Downtown Walking Tour, and etc. I stayed at HI Chicago for 2 weeks when I visited Chicago in Nov.2019. I wish I could move in there and make it my home 😊
