You will by no means have a luxury experience at this hotel. You will not be wowed by its trendy decor and boutique amenities. You will, however, have a fun and relaxing experiencing in a hotel that is reflective of the vibe and environment in which it exists. And, it comes with onsite dogs and cats - a true bonus! We loved Sassy!
My husband and I grew up in the area, but we now live in Atlanta. The hotel options in Chiefland are horrible, so when we visited family this time we decided to stay in Cedar Key. Having grown up in the area, we are very familiar with Cedar Key and absolutely love the slow, rustic vibe. No where is more laid back than Cedar Key.
Yes, the property is old and its age shows. It is a lot of work and very expensive to maintain property of this age in that kind of environment, where it is completely exposed to the water and the elements. And, it's not like there are a ton of resources around. Cedar Key is a tiny island with a tiny population. The closest Home Depot is about 1.5 hours away. It's in a very rural, isolated area with few services, merchants, etc. available.
And that's what we love about it, but it must be challenging to maintain and manage this property. Our room definitely showed its age, but it was comfortable and clean, met our needs, and we had such a great time. We wanted to stay an extra night, but we had to get back. We plan on going back and staying longer next time. This will definitely be our hotel of choice on future visits.
