6/10 Good

Really loved this hotel, and wanted to give it 5 s

I stayed one night, enjoyed it enough I booked a 2nd night (both via Hotels.com) Unfortunately, somehow, go to check in for the 2nd night (they didn’t have the same type of room for the 2nd night, so had to check out and check back in, which in itself was fine / reasonable). But crazy enough they didn’t have my 2nd night reservation when I went to check in I found the front desk attendant very unaccomadating and frankly, rude. I was told I had to contact Hotels.com, and that was basically it. Just crazy to me considering I had booked the same exact way via Hotels.com for 2 different nights, 1 reservation they got fine, 1 reservation they “didn’t receive”. Also surprising they didn’t contact Hotels.com considering I showed them my confirmation number / email for the reservation (especially considering I expected ultimately in the end they’d have to talk directly to Hotels.com anyways). But whatever. I went through the motions. Called Hotels.com, confirmed my reservation was made, just as I expected, and ultimately eventually Hotels.com ended up on the phone with the front desk. The front desk for whatever reason was just really dug in on “not having my reservation”, it was almost bizarre. I honestly (as much as l liked this hotel) was dangerously close to saying heck with it, telling Hotels.com to refund me and stay somewhere else. I ended up staying there the 2nd night, the front desk finally just accepted I had a reservation, but the customer service, yikes

A stay back in time

The check in was fine once we found the desk a sign at the street would have been nice. The walk through the courtyard was a great opportunity to see the wonderful food options. We were surprised with a gift bag of snacks and drink vouchers thanks to our booking service. Our room was small but that was expected as it is a historic hotel. Outlets were plentiful but not conveniently located again expected and why I carry an extension cord. Our room included a walled patio that was cozy with loungers as well as a table and chairs where we enjoyed our snacks and our own Happy Hour. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner in the courtyard that was enhanced by the lighted fountain and the cooperative weather conditions. The bed was very comfortable and the hotel was quiet except for the occasional trains that reminded us of the movie My Cousin Vinny. The breakfast was very good and featured tamales that were average but were a nice gesture. We were glad that we experienced El Capitan and I'm sure we will be back.

Oasis in Van Horn

The El Capitan is a must stay! We've been here before and will definitely return. The service is awesome, the room cute and comfy, and the restaurant has GREAT food. We love this little oasis and stop and stay when we are traveling thru Texas.

Retro experience in modern world

Very nice hotel in the middle of Van Horn. So much better than the chain hotels for roughly the same price. Liked the restaurant and bar on site. Lots of sitting areas inside and out to soak up the ambience of the place. Everyone we encountered was happy; staff, patrons and guests!

Don't plan on sleeping

If you plan on sleeping , do not stay at this place. There are trains that run consistently right in front of the hotel and then they are so loud I could not even sleep. The hotel is pretty and Everyone is friendly but it is Impossible to get a good night's sleep because of the trains
