Charming hotel which has it's quirks but that's all part of the experience with fantastic staff who made us feel very welcome and satisfied.
The view was fabulous and the food was terrific and the staff were brilliant.
The road up to the hotel is not for the faint hearted (Strada da Valmara) so take their advice on how to reach the property if you are not very confident with mountain roads.

A balcony with a view
It's really an experience to visit this hotel. Rooms and breakfast is as can be expected for the price range but the view from the balconies makes up for everything! would highly recommend to make a stop here - I will again in the future.

Only a stop over on way to como but was very pleased with my choice as were our friends as I do all the hotel bookings for our rd trips. Only one issue no kettle in room and as I’m an early riser I do like a coffee or two to start my day apart from that no issues.

Super accommodating. We booked last minute because another hotel booking fell through & upon checking in we were upgraded to a lake view room. Mohammed at the restaurant was very good to us.

A Wonderful Stay on Elba Island
We had a truly lovely stay on Elba Island. The accommodation was perfectly located—everything was within walking distance, including a stunning beach in the lower part of the area, where we spent many relaxing hours. The atmosphere overall was incredibly pleasant and welcoming.
We also really enjoyed the breakfast—it was delicious and served with a warm smile. There were some great little restaurants just around the corner, making evenings easy and enjoyable.
All in all, a fantastic experience. We would definitely come back!

I recently stayed at this hotel overlooking Lake Lugano, and I have to say—the view is absolutely breathtaking. Waking up each morning to the shimmering lake and surrounding mountains was truly unforgettable.
The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready to help with a smile. The breakfast was also quite good, with a nice variety of options to start the day right.
One thing to keep in mind: the hotel is located at the top of a mountain, which makes for the amazing views, but also means you’ll need to navigate a steep drive to get there. Avoid taking Valmara Road if possible—it's very steep, narrow, and quite challenging to drive, especially if you're not used to mountain roads.
Overall, a fantastic stay with scenery and service that make the climb worth it—just plan your route carefully!

Outstanding location
Outsanding and unique property. The views are stunning and breakfast is great. We were worried that it will be hot at night with no AC. It is higher up aka cooler at nights anyways so had no issues there (they have strong fans anyways). Super friendly staff and amazing ambience. Rustic and unique - definitely returning!

We had an amazing 6-day stay at Hotel Funicolare. The family suite provided to us was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. The location is excellent — just a short drive to both Lake Como and Lugano. The views from our rooms were absolutely breathtaking. The staff was friendly, courteous, and always helpful. We also enjoyed the good breakfast each morning. We look forward to returning to this hotel in the near future. Sharing a photo of the beautiful view from each room!

The USP of this property is the amazing view down to Lago di Lugano across into Switzerland. There is also the interesting story about the old funicular railway to the rear of the hotel which closed in 1977 but may be refurbished and reinstated if funds can be secured.
It is a rural location, about 20 mins walk from the nearby town of Lanzo d'Intelvi and the bus service from Como drops you about 400m from the hotel reception if you aren't driving.
Rooms were not air conditioned but you do get a oscillating fan!

Unbelievable View! Amazing breakfast!
Try finding a hotel with that view for that price anywhere in the world, the pictures just can't capture how amazing it is.
Breakfast was the best I've had and worth £30+ but was included.
Rooms were the cleanest by far I've stayed in and we are on a roadtrip around europe.
The receptionist was very helpful and the owner went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. For the fact they have only just opened I'd get in while the prices are cheap as they will surely go up with popularity.
Top recommendation from the owner, go and see the Balcony of Italy that is 15mins away WOW!
