Unexpected find
Very close to Civic Center Plaza Bart station, so easy commute from airport. Area IS sketchy, but hotel itself is an unexpected oasis. Funky courtyard surrounding pool. Rooms very clean and comfortable. Good value for money. Not the best area for a stroll, but some good restaurants not too far.

Funky Phoenix - Making Motels Cool Again
The hotel is super cool and trendy and has a really great vibe to it. The neighbourhood around the hotel is sketchy but I felt very safe inside the compound. The only tricky thing is if people are out on the patio area at night it is really noisy and you can hear everything. So if you're a light sleeper this place isn't for you. I was there during the week and only had one night of rowdy folks outside my window but otherwise it was all good and I really enjoyed it. It was like a little Oasis in the middle of San Francisco!

Great courtyard--will be back!
I really enjoyed staying at the Phoenix and will definitely plan to stay there again the next time I am in SF. The room was clean and comfortable and felt much more unique than a chain hotel. That being said, the hotel is older and so the condition of the room was not as good as some of the newer hotels out there. I loved the fact that the rooms face the courtyard; the courtyard is super cool and a great place to sit and have your morning coffee. I am not a party animal, so I was a bit concerned about noise from the courtyard at night. It started to taper off at 9 each night and they really do shut it down around 10PM, which is good because that's my bedtime!! I ended up not having any issues with the noise, though I would think twice about staying on a Friday or Saturday night when the courtyard is open later. The immediate neighborhood is not great; I felt comfortable walking around during the day but decided to take a Lyft at night rather than walking through the area alone. If you are not familiar with the Tenderloin, you might want to find out some more before deciding whether or not to stay here. The grounds of the hotel felt perfectly safe, but you may not want to be wandering the neighborhood at night if you don't know the area. Ultimately, the great location in the city, free parking, fun room, and amazing courtyard make this a fantastic hotel and good value.
