We had two rooms. One had an windows towards an alley and was quite. The other one had windows towards street and was loud. Otherwise rooms were comfortable and breakfast was good. Close to convention center but area a bit more rough compared to hotels west of the convention center. Still perfectly fine, just not much going on close by. There's a convenient muni stop right in front hotel. And a street west the vibe is much more lively.

Maybe Somewhere Better
I am a native San Franciscan and I have stayed here many times, but the neighborhood has really gone downhill and felt dangerous, even with hotel security.
The hotel was packed with school kids from Ireland and the elevator couldn't handle the load, so I used the stairs. Also there was road noise outside my room on Mission all night long that made for poor sleep.
The room itself was very comfortable and very well designed. I like the Hilton chain a lot and Hampton Inns are usually really good value; however, with the area in severe decline, I doubt I would stay here again.

Decent hotel. Too bad SF is a dump!
The SF Downtown Hampton Inn is fine. The area around it is not! During our stay, there was a shooting down the street and one night we were awoke to a siren and a loud speaker saying "Do not start fires in the street." During the day, the city cleans the sidewalks everyday, but in the morning, they are again covered with garbage and human feces. You have to be careful where you step! Downtown SF is a dump! It's a shame because SF used to be my favorite city.

Nice
Loved this hotel. Now, it is between a rough area and the nice side of the city. If you decide to walk, go into the direction of the higher buildings. The room was really comfortable. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I would stay there again!
