Great location/service, but could use a facelift
The hotel is in a fabulous location in Newport, and has a lot of rooms with water views. Hotel staff were very friendly. The room we stayed in was spacious. It would have been nice for the price we paid if rooms had a water closet. Also, for the price, rooms and the building could have been in better condition. Usually for that price point, we are used to more luxurious accommodations and decor. The rooms and hotel seemed like they were built in the 1960s with a quick paint job to modernize the look.

Gurney's Newport can do better. We have stayed at this hotel in the past, and the biggest difference this time was the service. We understand that there is a pandemic and that things may not be as they were in the past--that is perfectly understandable--however, as guests of the hotel paying $500 or more per night, it is disheartening to not get a space at the pool while there were plenty of day pass people there. We also needed to wait for over two hours to have our room (we did not get it until 6 PM) and never received any apology. Overall, it seemed like we were staying in a side-of-the-road hotel in terms of service. We have stayed at hotels all over the country, many in NYC that were not nearly this price, and received much better treatment. The pool and view are beautiful, but the overall experience was lacking. Everything seemed like an inconvenience for the staff--and we did not ask for much. It is a shame.

Probably won’t return
Great location other than not actually on a beach. Pool and restaurants are pretty good. Room was not great. Needs upgrade . Given the cost it’s not really worth it

Disappointment at Gurnery's
When we arrived, there was a fairly long line to check in. When it was our turn, they told us our room wasn't ready. We went to the outside restaurant to have a lite meal and we sat for 10-15 minutes and no one came to take our order or even offer a glass of water! We left and ate nuts we brought with us. When we finally got to the room, we had question. We tried calling the front desk, housekeeping and guest care. No one picked up at any of the lines after repeated attempts to call so we gave up. Not a great way to start the vacation. The hotel is still lovely, we hadn't ben there since it was a Hyatt. The Hyatt provided much more staff. The staff that were working this time were trying very hard and they were friendly and professional, there just weren't enough people at the front desk, the restaurant or the pool. It was a management issue and very disappointing. We will not be back. We'll take our travel dollars to some place that is willing to provide enough staff so gusts feel comfortable and well taken care of!

Very Clean all over the resort! At at time of required Social Distancing, the pool and management of guest and children must be maintained and not overlooked. This is a tough task but can be done and should be.

So bad it was comical...
Our stay at this hotel was so bad that it was comical. Across the board the staff was terribly rude. There is also zero security. People come and go as they please. This became a real concern to us when we waked to town for dinner. We had to call 911 because just outside of the hotel two very drunk men were jumping off of the bridge and one was knocked unconscious. We called 911 and then were accosted by a group of teenagers who were trying to bully us into not alerting the authorities (of course not the hotel's fault but we were very nervous knowing that these kids knew where we were staying). Also, there was a large, kids' party the last night we were there. People who were not staying at the hotel. They treated the place like trash. Left empty pizza boxes all over the grounds. Each morning the lawn was littered with empty glasses, broken glass, lime wedges from the night before. Our shower door was broken and only opened halfway. A server spilled an entire drink on me. We didn't bother mentioning issues to the staff after Day 1 because 1) there were so many 2) each time we spoke to a member of staff they were horribly rude. It is clear that the hotel has overextended itself and for that the customer had to suffer.

The scenery is beautiful, however; communication was lacking, the room was not worth over $800 and ever time we tried calling the front desk from our room they never picked up. I’ve stayed in much nicer hotel rooms for a quarter of the cost.

Loved it for a family getaway
We needed a few days away from home and wanted a place near the water, with a pool and that would allow dogs. Gurney's was perfect for our family of 5 (dog included) and we had a delightful few days stay. The rooms were spacious and clean, the staff could not have been nicer and the grounds are lovely. We rented a cabana by the pool one day which I highly recommend as we could lie on the couches and read, order food, and be a bit apart from the crowd. By the time we left, which was on a Saturday, it was getting a bit too crowded for me. One night we ate at the firepit and the food was great! All in all, thumbs up!

Disappointed for the price
Location was good. My room was not ready at 4:00 check in, it was 5:30 so sat around for quite a long time waiting. It was hot in the lobby with a mask since I make sure to wear it, even though a lot did not. I did not see all the quick service food they claimed to offer since the restaurants claimed to be at half capacity. There was room service but very expensive, which you would hope they would try and make it easier and less expensive to get. It took a very long time to get ice and we called for toilet paper and towels that never came. Stayed 2 nights and when they cleaned they never replaced the coffee mugs which we also called for and never came. So had to buy a $4 coffee in the lobby. And I’m pretty sure I was charged more then hotels .com advertised what I had booked the room for.

Goat Island flop
First room was dirty and smelled weird. They kindly found us new accommodations: smaller but cleaner. Pull out bed rock hard. The pool grounds were dirty / wrappers and food bits. The pool due to Covid only had minimal seating and the line up for it starts at 7:15am (8am open); the manager Pre-registers the folks in line - gets your name and room and issues bracelets tells you the rules and at 8am they just open the doors to a running mob! Why not only let in 2 or 4 at a time and help them set up? They offer bike rentals but only have 2, no shuttle service to the shopping dining area of Newport. Dirty tables and sticky old drink glasses and condensation rings everywhere in the outside areas. They could use brighter lights in the room bath shower had a SLOW drain and no exhaust fan/two towels for 3 people; housekeeping takes 30-45 mins to arrive - easier to just go to the front desk. Just a sort of run down sort of hotel. Roof shingles off - needs some sprucing. Kudos for the paper straws!! Excellent drinks! They do have a vegan option for dinner. Probably won’t return. Plus unfair that only the nice cars can park near the hotel entrance. What’s up with that?
