Top neighborhoods in Chiang Mai

Old City

Chiang Mai's Old City invites exploration with narrow lanes revealing golden temple spires and saffron-robed monks. The ancient walls frame a world where incense mingles with street food aromas and traditional wooden shophouses line pedestrian-friendly sois. Wat Chedi Luang's brick chedis and Wat Phra Singh's ornate halls showcase the rich Lanna heritage waiting around every corner. Family-run shophouses serve authentic Northern Thai khao soi and sticky rice throughout this walkable district. Red songthaews circle the historic moat while tuk-tuks wait outside temples. Traditional guesthouses in converted Lanna-style buildings offer accommodation with local character and insights into this cultural heart of Chiang Mai.

Nimman

Nimman buzzes with creative energy where digital nomads tap on laptops next to locals sipping artisanal coffee. This trendy Chiang Mai area balances modern style with authentic Thai charm through tree-lined streets dotted with art galleries and boutique shops. MAYA mall anchors the skyline while smaller venues showcase everything from local handicrafts to contemporary design. Dining options range from northern Thai specialties to international fusion cuisine at prices that won't break your budget. Stylish boutique hotels and hostels cater to various travellers, many offering co-working spaces and rooftop bars. Getting around is simple with abundant songthaews and motorbike taxis connecting you to Chiang Mai's Old City.

Chang Phueak

Chang Phueak delivers an authentic slice of Chiang Mai life away from tourist hotspots. This northern area blends university energy with local charm, where students grab cheap eats between classes and locals shop at Kham Tiang Market. Temple-hop to Wat Jed Yot or browse MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Centre when you need a break from people-watching at sidewalk cafes. Budget travellers thrive here with wallet-friendly guesthouses and student-priced Northern Thai cuisine. Getting around is easy with abundant songthaews running to the city centre and the Chang Phueak Bus Terminal connecting you to northern destinations. The university campus offers lovely green spaces perfect for afternoon strolls.

Chang Moi

Chang Moi captures the essence of Chiang Mai with its golden temple spires and bustling markets. Wat Chedi Luang's ancient courtyards welcome wandering monks, while Warorot Market buzzes with vendors selling silks and spices. The Night Bazaar lights up after dark as artisans carve teak beside steaming noodle carts. This historic area offers authentic cultural immersion through its temples and vibrant shopping scenes. Getting around is a breeze with red songthaews running every few minutes. The area serves as a street food paradise where you can sample khao soi noodles and mango sticky rice from local vendors. Traditional guesthouses and boutique hotels in converted shophouses provide authentic accommodation with cultural charm.

Chang Khlan

The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar transforms Chang Khlan into a sensory playground after sunset. Shoppers haggle for handcrafted souvenirs while food stalls dish up steaming bowls of khao soi and sweet mango sticky rice. Traditional temples and artisan workshops dot the area, offering quiet cultural moments between shopping sprees. Hotels line the peaceful Ping River, ranging from budget guesthouses to swanky riverside resorts. Getting around is a breeze with abundant tuk-tuks and red songthaews running along Chang Khlan Road. Early mornings reveal a different side of this lively district before the evening's commercial buzz takes over.

Kampaeng Ngam Hotel

10/10 Excellent
"This is a great hotel in Chiang Mai. Been to this city many times , first time at this hotel. From the service to the cleanliness to the food and everything else, we loved our stay here. Rooms are spacious and well kept. I loved the bed and rain shower. The pool is very clean and really refreshing for a nice dip or even laps to keep your cardiovascular levels up. The breakfast is very good. I especially love the eggs. Stayed here only 2 nights and it was a bit different each day. The coffee machine pumps out incredible coffee. My favorite was the Mocha. If you don’t have breakfast included with your package, I still recommend purchasing it while there. The area to sit to eat is beautiful. All the front desk staff is wonderful. Good English speaking staff, very friendly & knowledgeable about the area. Location is very good , can walk to the main drag where there’s a lot of markets and even a Big C. Housekeeping and food staff also very efficient and nice. Next time in Chiang Mai, we’re coming back here. I highly recommend this hotel. It was also very quiet at night so we slept good and felt very relaxed throughout our stay. "

" Clean large spacious room. Staff is excellent, very friendly and welcoming. Abundant breakfast and service in a beautiful restaurant. AC works great. Location was perfect, so many food options and stores to visit. I highly recommend this hotel. The only thing I’d mention is that you should bring earplugs because there’s a lot of loud restaurants in the area. Walls a bit thin also. "
