2/10 Poor

They took me to 3 rundown and filthy rooms before I demanded a refund. Mattresses torn, hair on bed, gross stains on linens. Then a manager went with me to find a suitable room and one room had clothes in it. Final room was OK. It’s cheap for a reason. They would not allow early checkin despite having rooms without charging me additional $13. Don’t waste time here.

MY go to hotel in Rio
Stayed more than a month (November 27-December 30)at this hotel, with 7 different reservations, and I always stay at this hotel when in Rio despite some deficiencies. The reception staff is uniformly friendly, courteous, and helpful, always greeting me and saying hello when I walked by the reception desk. They were quick to provide any assistance I needed or if there was a problem that needed fixing. I mostly dealt with the morning reception staff (Nathany, Yuri, Luiz, and Gabriele) doing the multiple check-ins and check-outs due to my multiple reservations. They were very quick and efficient in doing them, and it was a pleasure interacting with them. The breakfast staff is also very friendly, even though they are usually very busy handling the morning breakfast rush. Luxury rooms are fairly large, black-out curtains good, shower water pressure is great and plenty of hot water, nice roof top pool and sauna (occasionally was out of service during my stay), big buffet breakfast included in price. Fantastic location near Praca Maua and Uruguaiana market. Tremendous value for the price (except for around New Year’s eve). Wi-Fi didn't work well for a few days in my high floor room. Worked better on a lower floor, although even there it sometimes did not work for a short while.

My go to hotel in Rio
Continuation of review that did not fit in original review Bathrooms are rather small and door does not open 180 degrees, so it gets in the way when using the bathroom (especially in the standard rooms, where you can't use the toilet if the door is more than partially open) and bathroom gets hot when the door is closed. Air conditioner is a little noisy (although it helps block street noise). I take off the duvet/bedspread so I can keep the room at a higher temperature at night so the AC doesn’t run so much in the night (the black-out curtains also block the morning sun from heating up the room). There are no English-language channels, and even the foreign films on the movie channels are dubbed into Portuguese. Rooms facing the street can be noisy due to traffic noise and the warning bells of the VLT trams that go by the hotel from dawn to after midnight. The hotel is also just down the street from a church, which rings the church bells at 6 AM every morning, which also contributes to making the rooms noisy (although they probably are heard in other hotels in the area also). Scrambled eggs are served for breakfast but I have never eaten them as they are under-cooked and too runny. No individual egg servings are offered.

2/10 Poor

For just one night, it's ok. Out room was not very clean and the shower head sprayed water everywhere but down. The water in the pool was cloudy and almost green. The breakfast was, at best, a Chinese fire drill. The staff was not prepared for anything at all. There were no clean plates or cups. My wife asked for a clean plate, and the staff member gave her a stack of them and told her to put them on the buffet table. I asked for one, and I was told to wait while he held a clean one in his hand! The food was alright. I won't be going there again.

It was just a couple of nights. So I stayed in central area not far from GIG international airport. It was NO hot water for shower as well as sink. Took cold shower for 4 times!!! I told front desk people, but nobody came to repair it. Wifi connection from my room was impossible to connect. Went to hotel lobby to use wifi. But it was dropped in 10 minutes. To this day, 2 weeks after my Rio stay,my sister who lives in Japan never got e-mails from Rio. There were no North American tourists at that time when I was in this hotel.

Great value at the price
Pros Great value. Great location. Good sauna. Nice roof top area. OK room. Very nice staff. Good coffee at breakfast. Good Internet. Cons Breakfast is usually included in the rate but is always the same. Scrambled eggs are inedible because they are undercooked and runny. Cannot get cooked to order eggs without extra charge. TV has only 5 channels and is useless to watch unless you speak Portuguese. No English language channel.
